Guru,
Our Stainless Maytag fridge is only 3 yrs .old and the reefer won't cool any longer. The freezer works fine and I can hear a hum as if the motor is still running. The panel works great too but it won't get cold. Is this a common problem with this model and is it likely to be the fan in the freezer that pulls cold air up to the fridge? Is that the same thing as the evaporator fan? Is there a place I can get a diagram so I can replace it instead of paying $300 for and already too-expensive refrigerator? Thanks for your help.
Hello frooska,
kindly look at the back panel of the freezer section. if you can hear the humming sound, find out where it is coming from. if the sound is coming from the compressor, that means the evaporator fan is not running.
but, take note that u need to press the door switch of the freezer in order to check the fan. the fan stops every time the door is open. if the fan is not running, you have to remove the middle panel, above the evaporator, the fan would be there. ( in the freezer section)
but if the fan is running and the back panel of the freezer is full of frost, then that would be a defrost issue.
defrost heater, bi-metal or defrost controller.

Last night the refrigerator went warm but freezer still working. Lights/contols, etc. seem OK. Can hear compressor run sometimes. Am going to pull the back panel to have a look next.
Replaced evaporator fan, fan still not coming on. Freezer working but frig staying at 70.
