Sure hope someone has a solution to a real problem with the Sony DVDirect, VRD-VC20 writer. I purchased this about a year ago from Best Buy. It worked fine until recently, when I tried copying home movies and pre-recorded programs on the digital cable box. I have done nothing different, other than load a clean DVD into the machine. When it is finalizing the disk, it keeps giving a "finalize error" message and ejects the disk. I've been using the same DVD's that I had been using in the past (which worked fine), but I'm totally clueless to what's going on... If anyone has an idea how to solve this, I'd really, really, appreciate it. I DID upgrade the firmware about one month after buying it, and had success with the 16x DVD's. Have a pile of disks that are worthless, and am about ready to give this device the heave-ho. The reviews on Epinions.com were not very kind... Sincerely, Dave I have a DVD recorded off live TV that didn't finish writing the index when the recording finished. Now it show this as an empty title. How can I view these 3 hours that were recorded. The DVD recorder said "Disc Error" about 5 minutes before the show ended.

Take, if good batteris from the remote controller and recycel the unit, and by a better one. I have the same problem, recordings will stay on the dvd only a short thime readable and later the disk is empty.
Sorry my english.

The manual isn't too helpful either - "Recording error other than below," it says. There are a couple of possibilities. The Philips/Magnavox/Funai recorders automatically record in VR mode when you use +R discs (there are two possible recording modes - V Mode and VR Mode). Is it possible that you have switched disc types lately? If you are currently using -R discs, switch to +R and vice versa. The manual states that +/-RW discs take a while to initialize.
I couldn't find a full factory reset on that one, so you may have to unplug the unit for about 20 minutes to restore all the defaults.
Another possibility: Finalization requires some extra space on the disc. If you accidentally pressed the button that changes the recording format between SP, EP, LP, etc., you may not be able to fit the same amount of video on the disc that you were able to fit before. You can change the format by pressing the Disc Mode button on the remote - LP Mode will fit 3 hours worth of recordings onto a 2-hr disc and is considered a "medium quality" recording. Try changing the Disc Mode to LP and see if it will finalize the next disc that you record. The downside of this possibility is that the discs that you have already made that are giving you errors are not "fixable" - you will will have to re-record the shows to a new disc in LP mode.
Good luck!

hi,
Error 25 by it means copy prohibited program. You can Try one thing, if there is any S-video out in your cable box or in your tv, then connect the S video out to the S-video input of the Recorder. Also connect the audio out of cabe box or the audio out of your tv to recorder, becuse S-video contains only Video information.
ok

Same problem affecting both my Toshiba and Magnavox recorders. Began about a month ago and concerns my Comcast channels 703-714 (and their non-HD counterparts)....this is the 4 major networks plus PBS.....On Toshiba Forum, found 3 recent posts with same problem, and all mentioned Comcast. Comcast told me they have no idea......but I'm sure they're the culprit.
