Can't record a DVD

I have been recording DVDs for months, all of sudden my recorder isn't working. After the recoding is done, it says I think, writing to menu. This used to takemomets, now it takes for ever. Eventually it kicks the disk out. When I reload th the disk,it says disk error. this has happened the last 10 movies I tried to record. Is the recorder shot?

SOURCE: DVD player recorder won't read or play any disc

This just worked for me. Don't know how long it will last though. I found it on this webpage
http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/15118/130292.html

To do a reset:
On the remote control press the SETUP button,
Press the right key on the remote 3 times,
The Preference page will show up,
Press the down arrow five time to highlight
"default", hit right arrow to highlight "reset"
Press enter to reset. Turn off/on machine, etc.

I have since learned about finalizing it and it works just fine. Maybe Insignia isn't total junk.

SOURCE: How do I record my vhs tapes to Disk

I have done a lot of dubbing on my machine. First make sure the DVD is formatted. When you put in a new disc it should ask you if you want to initialize. Once that is done, switch to VCR mode. push play on the VCR then push the DUB button on the front of the machine. I hope it helps.

SOURCE: I cannot get my Insignia combo player to play some

You may need to have you unit checked out for aging of the laser, or some weakening of the units drive circuits. You can call Insignia Technical Support at this number : 1-877-467-4289. You can also try cleaning the laser head with Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab. Gently try cleaning the laser by rubbing the cotton swab with very little alcohol until the head seems clean and shines. Do not use too much pressure or you may damage the alignment of the laser. Also used a can of compressed air to blow clean any excess dust and debris in the drive carriage. Hope this helps you with your problem.

DVDs come in different versions.
Try using the -R DVDs. Once your DVD recorder finalizes the DVDs they should on any DVD palyer.

Check your manual to find out the finalizing method for your DVD recorder.

I hope this solution is helpful. Let me know.

Re recording on previously used DVDs

What kind of DVDs are you using? Reliable or the cheap ones? Also, remember that the loudly boasted life span of a digital disc refers to readings, not writing and re-writing. Tried to format them in another recorder yet? Oh, and a cleanup on the discs themselves is required. Dust, fingerprints... everything seems to attach itself on a dvd.

Failure to record on -R DVDs

DVD-Rs do work with the RDR-VX500 ...... I had not recorded on mine for a few months after I ran out of the last batch ....... then I tried recording on the newer Sony DVD-Rs I had ...... would not record on DVD-R ..... turns out the instructions say the recorder will not work with any DVDs faster than 8x .... It looks like it's recording but it doesn't ..... then I noticed the newer DVDs were 16x ...... found an old 8x and tried it and it works fine ..... turns out the unit won't record slower on a 16x, it just won't record at all ...... get 8x and you'll be ok

DVD recoder not recording

I had this problem with my R120, it first wouldn't record and eventually wouldn't play, just gave either an error message or "wrong disc.' Then, another DVD player I own did the same thing.

What worked? I opened them both up and swabbed the laser lens with alcohol and then the clean end of the cotton swab. Now both work like a charm. I figure that all the dirty rental DVDs lowly drop dust and gunk and over a few months the build-up caused failure.

Just to be safe, I also used canned air to remove from inside the unit, around the circuit board and on the lens.

I'd advise leaving the unit unplugged for a day or more to let any stored energy drain and if you're not familiar with safety procedures, take it to someone who is.
