Toshiba D-VR4XSU "system error" please wait. flashing "ok" in box below

The DVD player worked just fine the week before, now we see the system error, please wait and a flashing "ok" below. We have no idea what to do. If we leave it flashing, it just goes on, if we click enter then it goes away but nothing else happens.

Having absolutely exact the same problem with the same

model, TOSHIBA D-VR4XSU. Seems to be manufacturer's defect.

I tried the second solution (hold in the two buttons....) first, and it worked just fine. I had to re-set the clock and re-program the timer to record a game that I had previously set up. Thanks very much. (Why isn't this in the Owner's Manual?)

UNPLUG THE UNIT FROM WALL AC OUTLET FOR TWO HOURS TO RESET. IF IT DOESN'T RESET, TURN ON UNIT, SELECT DVD, HOLD CHANNEL UP AND PLAY BUTTONS ON FRONT OF UNIT FOR FIVE SECONDS. UNIT SHOULD REINITIALIZE.

My Toshiba VCR & DVD video recorder model D-VR4XSU won't eject a DVD disc from the player, neither by pressing the eject button on the remote nor by the eject button on the players console.

A temporary solution would be to use a paperclip to eject it; usually, any disk drive has a little hole that a paperclip can be stuck into which forces it to eject.

Either you DVD is corrupt, OR the DVD reader is not working correctly. It seems the reason the restore failed, is that it "Thinks" the Hard Drive is corrupt, too corrupt to replace the OS on...
The only thing to try now, is to get a Windows install DVD, put DVD in drive and boot from the DVD, then try to install with that, when you get to installing and it asks if you want to Format, do so, format Full NTFS. Then try to proceed to installing. If this too fails then you will need to replace your hard Drive, quite a simple matter.

Says blank DVD-RW is not formatted, then formats -- then error

I have same TOSHIBA D-VR4XSU VCR/DVD RECORDER. According to the
manual, you (COULD) can use for recording: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R (see page 50). WRONG!!! I bought all 3 types of discs, but after few
weeks I got same experience you got now. Just type DVD-R works. The other
types were - wasted money and a lot of time trying to finalize the disc. I had to
throw all into the garbage. Try DVD-R and you should?? be O.K.

When done the machine turns off automatically, and you turn it onagain. Every time mine has stopped working this has fixed it. This might work with yours as well.

System Error

FYI...the best suggestion I've seen is to hold the channel up and play buttons simutaneously....thereby causing the machine to return to the "factory initialized" state. So far so good for me. We'll see. photog1

My dvd always shows "system error" and won't play commercial copyright dvds, only recorded ones.

I had the same problem with my recorder except that it wouldnt play any discs at all.. I finally unplugged the recorder and left it unplugged for 16 hours. Now it is fine. I am not getting any error messages.

Error Message

The manual says to press the display button (just below the eject button) on the remote. This worked for me.
