Honda 5.5 HP starts & dies

Runs 10 sec, then dies. Will not start again unless allowed to sit 10 min.
Good compression & spark after stalling.
Gas (fresh) flows freely to carb bowl, I've cleaned entire passage between bowl & throat...no obstructions.
Thanks.

I've had the carb off & cleaned every square millimeter of it.

    I'm convinced it's not a fuel problem.

I'm thinking sticking valve, but since every disassembly with a Honda means a ruined gasket, I'm trying other things before pulling the head.

  • pauls329 Jan 12, 2009

    Engine: GX140.

I've had every piece of the carb disassembled, inspected, & cleaned.

When it dies, no choke setting will prevent it, or allow it to be restarted.

EVERY piece I've removed that has a gasket resulted in the gasket sticking to both pieces, resulting in a torn gasket.

    Oil is topped right up.

There is no oil sensor on this particular engine.

Fuel in bowl & fat blue spark after stalling.

If I keep yanking the pull rope, it will "pop", but not start.

I've got auto trans fluid in cyl now, but it's too cold to be fussing with.

I've got plenty food, so I'm not too worried about being snowed in.

    Jan.30...Final Update

    Well...it's working...sort of.

When first trouble shooting, I removed the spark plug after it stalled, connected & grounded it, & observed a fat, blue spark.

The problem isn't electrical I said to myself.

After trying everything else multiple times, I replaced the spark plug, & the stalling problem is gone.

Now it won't idle unless it has partial choke.

It will run if I open the choke while simultaniously opening throttle.

In this condition, it will surge like an old "hit & miss" engine under no load.

Under load, it runs evenly with plenty of power.

That's it till the spring...then I'll soak the carb. Right now it's too cold

    Thanks for all the help.

Had the same problem with my Honda engined mower. you can't see it easily, but there is a very fine screen in the outlet of the fuel tank that gets blocked and fuel will not pass thru it fast enough to refill carb. remove tank and pour fuel in another container . Use a flexible plastic tube in the outlet or make a small wire hook to penetrate the screen,or preferably, remove it. confirm that fuel flows freely thru it, remove any debris, and reassemble. Change spark plug, add fresh fuel, and test. best of luck!!!! Ray

If it has been unused for a few weeks remove the float bowl, remove the main jet and clean it, you should be able to see a clean hole through it.

Have you pysicaly removed the jets and emusion tube and cleaned the cross drillings in the tube?

Will the engine run with part or full choke?

What model is the motor It will start with a G.

If its a OHV the valves can be checked with out damaging the gasket..

Have you checked the oil level? the oil alert might be shuting it down. they also have been faulty in the past, IF the oil is at the top of the dipstick, remove the yellow wire that comes out of the side of the crankcase. and try and run the engine..

When it shuts down, is there fuel in the bowl when you remove drain bolt? run it in to a cup.

the valve clearance is 0.15mm in 0.20mm ex

Turn engine over against rotation when it shuts down to see it it has compression. the decompressor can give a faulse reading.

My lawn tractor craftsman 14.5hp IC OHV B&S stalls approx. 5 mins after starting so I restart and it can stall in another 10-15 min again and so on.

you may have some debris in your gas tank blocking the pickup tube. It will float away when the mower dies, then block the tube after it runs again.

1993 HONDA SHADOW VLX 600, STARTS RUNS FOR 5 MINUTES AND DIES, I CHECKED EVERYTHING FUEL RELATED,IT'S NOT A FUEL PROBLEM

From your description you can be fairly certain it is an electronic problem.

I had a similar problem once with my Honda CX500. I found the connections to the ignition module had gone green and a good clean up restored normal running.

Starts and runs great(when engine is cold).\r\nafter 15 mins the engine dies. will start up again, but will only run about 5 sec. and then dies. toro super recycler 5.5 hp GTS5

I would check the gas cap. If the gas cap is plugged or pieces missing from inside it will not allow air into the tank and the fuel will not flow properly to the carburetor. Just loosen the cap and try it, if it does not change check for dirt in the fuel line.

You need to replace your coil pack. It sounds to be over heating which results in no spark being sent and the enige dies. Very common fault and easily fixed.
