When I scan it automatically goes to TIF and I would like it to be PDF, how do I change the settings.
Scan and create PDF document You need to install a PDF printer driver on your computer first. There are quite a few freeware PDF writer programs on the Internet you can download one such as CutePDF.
From your computer SCAN your document then click on File - Print and select the PDF writer as the printer device. Then name and save the PDF file. To download Cutepdf PDF printer driver (freeware) click on this link :- http://www.cutepdf.com/

Does this model come with a "Lexmark All in One Center" software ?. If so, try this link and see if it helps:

If the "File" option does not work above, you can select the option "Send Scanned Image to" - 'Acrobat Reader'.

This copier scans as an image. The contents of this file are not searchable. The output type (as default) can be set by logging into the web interface of the machine. As for one- touches that are allready setup as tif, you would need to edit the one touch parameters to set the device to PDF. (image only)
SOURCE: I have an HP 6310
I have an HP 6310 All-in-One. I cannot scan documents directly to create PDF files. I can only scan to .tif format and then convert to .pdf . It worked fine until a week or two ago. HP can only suggest reinstalling. I have done that at least 20 times with same result. My wife's computer connected to same printer scans to pdf with no problem so I know problem is in my computer not in Hp device. I even reformated my machine and re-installed all my programs and the printer/scanner and no improvement.
I have had the same problem, the solution is that you must install the IRIS OCR Software my pdf extensions re-apeared after I did this

You will find those settings in your scanning software on your computer, since all of them are different, there is no one right answer. Some you have to choose each time you start a new job or document.
