Adjusting the picture tubes is a scary proposition, but since you have already done it...
The easiest way to balance the gray scale is to turn the color all the way down on the set. The next part is easier with two people if the screen controls are on the back of the set. This is the part you saw that has six small knobs on it. There are control for the focus of the red, gree and blue and for the screen level of the red, green and blue. You will want to adjust the screen controls in an effort to get the picture black and white (this is why you turn the color down), hence the term "gray scale". Just make slight adjustments, take your and be patient. It will take some time, but you will get your picture balanced back out in time.
It sounds to me like you have a problem with the sony tv. In many cases I have ran into a problem like this. If the tv blinks a certain number of times it is a defect code intended to direct the service person to the problem. I am almost posative that five blinks usually means that there is a problem in the screen circuit or picture tube. If you noticed any discoloration on the screen it means the tube has weakened, but don't lose hope. Sometimes when this problem occurs you can save the set by having your local repair center rejuvinate the picture tube. Using a piece of equiptment designed to burn debris from the filaments, a picture tube restorer/rejuvinator is your best bet in this case. One more side note, you can usually temporairily solve this problem that you are having by slightly adjusting the master screen control located on the flyback transformer, (which is the large, dark colored object with the big red wire coming from it and feeding high voltage to the tube). Hope this information is helpful to you and feel free to contact me if I can further assist you, Russmann.
Did you change the resistor by yourself? I am not sure if your TV has manual adjust on the back of the TV that you can adjust. Some times turning the TV Off and unplug it from the wall helps because it resets the TV. Check your Back ground color and see what is the dominating color. Blue, Green or Red. If this doesn't work please call a professional to look at it.
