Somehow your MBR (Master Boot Record) likely got corrupted or possibly your hard drive went bad coincidentally.

Simply, you will start your computer from your Windows CD/DVD install disk, then when at a DOS prompt ( D:\ ) you will then type: FDISK /MBR (press enter).

Find your Operating System install DVD and start your computer with it, then follow instructions within this discussion:
Restore Windows XP MBR without Windows XP disc

Alternatively, review my search results for other instructions:
fdisk mbr windows xp Google Search

SOURCE: My windows xp cant boot propery it is restarting itself.

-Try to boot the system to windows xp cd,then run windows repair.
-repairing windows make take up to 1-2 hours depending what capacity of hdd you have but you may need to complete the repair. If repair failed to complete.
-contact manufacturer and have them diagnose the entire system. and chck for the system warranty and look if there any error code if the error code lead to replacing the hdd, then request to replace the hdd.

put your xp disk in the optical drive.Turn off computer. Turn computer back on as soon as you turn it on start tapping f 12 constantly.it should go the boot menu giving you a choice of booting from cd or hard drive choose boot from cd.Be sure you choose repair rather than new installation or you could loose all your information stored on the hard drive,I personally would try safe mode first you can get to safe mode by tapping f 6 when you first turn on your computer.

I am having the same problem. Elix, that is a great suggestion, however this particular model from Gateway does not ship with a recovery CD. There is a recovery partition on the HDD, however with this particular problem the recovery partition is not accessible.

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

Gateway MP8708 Won't boot past BIOS and won't boot into CD/USB/Safe Mode on XP - Blank screen with keyboard dead - Num locks on and wireless light

Windows won't start up? Well, try this Download Tenorshare Data Recovery from its offical site and install it. Burn it into CD/DVD, or USB flash, put into the computer you need to repair, Bios setting. It can make sure your important data will not lose. Best of luck

Keyboard not wirelessly connecting

Sounds like the battery in the keyboard is dead. Also make sure you have the wireless doggle that came with the keyboard and mouse plugged into the usb port. You might try plugging it into another port.

I'm thinking your keyboard is dead because of the battery or a virus has hijacked your keyboard.

Try booting up in Safe Mode to make sure it's not virus related. Turn the computer off, then turn it on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Select the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different because the icons are bigger and the screen is darker, this is normal. If your keyboard works in safe mode then you might have a virus that can't function in safe mode.

It wont boot, goes to black screen with whit blinking dash

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.
