How do I adjust the tension.
There is no tension to adjust on the Makita HR4041C rotary hammer drill. If you are not getting the hammer action you think you should be it's possible the o-rings on the piston are damaged or not lubricated or the striker is stuck or not lubricated enough to work properly. If you're having problems with the bit turning, there are several gears that turn the bit that could be slipping or are stripped. If you need a manual or brakedown of the tool, one is available on www.makitatools.com. The insides of rotary hammers are fairly complicated so be carefull of what goes where if you decide to take the tool apart to check for internal problems.

Go to the below site for a manual. There isn't any reference to a glass window in the manual but the tool does need to be regreased as indicated in the manual, especially if it's used frequently. If you do it yourself, pay close attention to how much grease you put in the tool. Too much grease causes excessive drag and makes the motor work harder.
You can find an owner's manual and parts breakdown on Makita's website: http://www.makitatools.com/en-us/Modules/Tools/ToolDetails.aspx?ID=173.

Most bits will turn during just hammering if they are intended for drilling. I assume you have tried changing the rotation setting a few times to see if it stops the problem. There needs to be significant drag to keep the bit from turning when hammering just due to the way the mechanism works.
