I resolved the same issue with my 2 Kindles by requesting a "phone call" from Amazon's "contact us" site. They phoned within a minute and explained the way to do it in seconds. Now I do it by going to my Amazon page to manage my Kindle and mark the book I want to copy (be sure to check off the correct Kindle) and click on the tab deliver above your list.
In your Amazon account, ( If you don't have one, create one) simply login and click on the "Manage your Kindle" tab on the right of the screen, and then select the "my devices" option, where you can register or deregister your Kindle.
If your Kindle is second-hand, you'll need the serial number of your Kindle to register it in your name.
