There is a place in the printer driver (epson part) that hays checkboxes for "color" and "Black & White". If you are trying to do this becasue you are out of one or more of the color inks, and can't print- you still won't be able to until you replace the empty ink(s), even though you told it black & White

The cover on the printer should lift up so that you can see your ink cartridges. Also once you lift the cover, you should notice that there is a picture step-by-step instruction for doing this. Anyway you will notice that the print head with the ink cartridges on it are all the way to the left. With the power off, put your fingers on the cartridges and pull the printhead and cartridges to the center right in front of you so that you can get to it. The cartridge that you want to replace will lift up and back as they are snapped into place and held gently with a tab. Pull on it gently and it will come out. Replace it with the new one and be sure you take off a little cover that the new will have. Close the lid and power it back up and you're back in business. God bless.
SOURCE: How to get Epson R300 stylus monitor to work in Vista
I have the same problem with my stylus C88. Epson never did provide Vista drivers so I have never found a way to get the Epson software to work with Vista. The print driver does work so you will be able to print but you'll have to clean the nozzle manually by pushing the button on the printer rather than using the Epson Monitor. Sorry.
SOURCE: Clean "Waste Ink Cartridge" Epson R300
Had the same problem. (its a work around without removing the waste ink pad)
Took alot of work but I fixed it.
Frist thing you need to know that error means your ink waste pad is
full. Its a $75.00 to replace but there is a work around it.
You will need this free app. SSC service utitlty.
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html Its a great app.
Instrusctions are on the website there.
You will also have to Open the access panel on the rear of the printer (remove screw) and
look inside carefullly with a flashlight. You will see a tube (down and
to your left) coming from the cleaning pump and it will have an open
end on it. This is the tube that delivers ink to the waste pad.
Use a piece of coat hanger wire or equivalent, and fish out this
piece of tube. Bring it to the outside of the printer, thru the access
panel.
Find yourself a suitable container
(Tupperware or a plastic cup or jar) that is not too tall. Put the tube
into this container and secure the tube and container so they won’t
come apart or lose connection if the printer is moved.
If you wish you can make a hole or notch in the access panel cover so it can be replaced.

If you have carried out 4 to 5 head cleans, waited about 8 hours and done another 3 or head cleans doing nozzle checks after each clean (as recommended by the manual) and there is still no improvement then you will need a third party head cleaning solution such as this one:
http://websites.uk-plc.net/UK_Inkjet_Cartridges_PLUS/products/Print_Head_Cleaner.htm
Other makes & brands are available just google "inkjet head cleaning solution" Hope this helps.
