I want to connect my dvr box to my tv, so I can get a picture. I am now able to get audio, but no picture. What did I do wrong? I have the blue, red, and white cables and I also have an S-video cable. Help!

You are correct. I feel your pain. This will not work.
HDMI is a pure digital signal and the providers require the content coming over the Dish DVR to be COPY PROTECTED. So it will not work unless the HDMI cable goes directly from the DVR to the TV. This is to stop people from being able to make their own recordings of Dish shows, or making copies of your DVR recordings. If you really want to run things through your reciver, you're going to have to use the "component" or "composite" video feeds, not the HDMI. Sorry.
Do you really have TV Audio OUT to a DVD (last sentence)?
Most DVR's have digital and analog audio outputs. Since every device they are intended to feed would have its own volume control a DVR output volume control might be redundant. Treat a DVR like any other audio device. Connect it to any available input on the receiver EXCEPT PHONO.
If you run the audio from the DVR (and EVERY video source) directly to the STA-795 you can bypass the TV and its questionable audio electronics (yuk). You can split the analog output of the DVR with y-cables and run it from the DVR to TO the TV for casual viewing and listening through the TV sound system (news, Oprah, etc).
common problem, trouble is that the receiver cant keep up with the dvr box. try this, dont use audio from your dvr into your reciever, take the audio out from the tv, and go into the receiver, now the sound is after the picture and should catch up with itself.
This is how the connection is suppose to be, DVR "OUT", to TV "IN" using the RCA plugs, then press AV on the TV. If this is how you connected it, then maybe there is something wrong with the video wire (Yellow).
As for the DVD, you need to connect an Audio wire separately because the component Red + Green + Blue wire only stands for video. Audio is Red and White, this must be connected for you to get sound from the DVD.
To connect the Audio for your DVD player, connect Red and White wire to Audio "OUT" of your DVD player, to "AUX" in of your AVR 146 receiver, then select AUX on your receiver and sound will come out from your DVD through the receiver.
I hope this is not complicated for you. This connection is simple, all you need is to understand the basics which is OUT and IN. If you want to watch DVD on your TV, this means the DVD will be good OUT to IN of the DVD. The same goes for audio.

Use an RCA audio/video cable for this set up (Yellow/Red/White).
Connect from the Video out (Yellow) connection on the back of the cable box to the Video in on the back of the DVR.
Connect the audio (Red/White) cables from audio out connection on the back of the cable box to the "Audio in" on the back of the DVR.
This should still get you a decent picture but not a true HD picture for your recordings.
When you set the timer to record set it to record either E1 or E2 depending on which input you connected the cable box to and ensure that the cable box is tuned to the channel you wish to record.
*** NOTE: If you keep the HDMI cable connected as you have for the cable box and watch normal TV through the HDMI input on the TV you will get HD programming for your general viewing but still have the option to record with the DVR at a lower quality. ***
1. Connect cable to cable HD DVR box, connect video out of cable box to Sony receiver TV video in, connect audio L and R out of cable box to Sony receiver TV audio in and connect TV out of receiver to video in of Panasonic projector
2. Connect Audio and Video out of DVD player respectively to DVD in of receiver. Good Luck :)
Did you say you went in to DVR set-up and checked the component out audio option? I have had similiar problems with motorola dvr boxes and once I was able to enable audio output option the dvr digital output was fine. Find the manual for the model dvd and this may cure.
well there the first thing i would check is the audio connection..
basically if you are recording from a playing media, like a dvf player
it would be like this
audio and video out from the dvd player to the inputs in the recorder.. then the out puts from the recorder to the input in the tv... (just a refrence)
upload your diagram, and state exactly what you want to record from.. if its the tv or another media type..
If its from the tv,, lets say you got cable and you want to record from cable,, Its
connect the out put from the cable box to the input of the dvr, then the out from the dvr to the input of the tv..
or
if its from an arial
connect the arial to the dvr,, now connect the dvr to the tv,, I guess you got the picture of what i am saying..
Basically all the out put from the media you wish to record from to the DVR and then from the DVR to the Tv..
With the RGB you have to run seperate audio ,I think you have ran the seperate cables for the sound but they are in the wrong place.try changing the RW from the DVR to the TV and you should get sound from them.The unfortunate truth about the HDMI is that the HDMI format has a problem effectivly communicating between components.I am a Directv certified High Definition technition and %50 of the TV's that I connect the HDMI to will not receive the signal.One trick that I have found that works is to make sure you have a picture on the RGB then connect the HDMI.Once you have these connected ,turn your TV off and unplug the power cord from the DVR for 30 sec then plug the DVR in and wait 5 minutes for it to power up then turn your TV on and switch to your HDMI input.This method sometimes works to "Jumpstart" the HDMI input on the TV .There is no guarantee that this will work but is sounds like for now this is your only option,GOOD LUCK.
