14 kt gold & diamond
Probably not what you paid for it, sad to say. So many were made, and with the recession and the advent of a reliable timepiece in everyone's pocket anyway, the collector's market for elegant wristwatches has declined somewhat. It also varies dramatically depending on what kind of market you're selling in. Pawnbrokers, jewelers, and watch collectors all have different ideas of how to determine a piece's value. Condition and provenance also play a large part of any appraisal. I wouldn't accept less than $250 if I were you, but I wouldn't expect more than $500. In the long run, your best bet to have it keep its' value would be to keep it until it can be classified as vintage or an antique. Once most of the other Lucien Piccard watches that were made at the same time as it was have failed, been melted for gold or lost, the value will start to go up again, and if you or your family can keep it for a VERY long time indeed, then it's definitely possible to make a profit on a watch.

The arrows you are seeing are for sizing the band. I cannot find 26311SS in my data base, but I have a good idea what you need to do. The curved piece is a safty that goes over the clasp. Take something like a round toothpick and with the curved piece going to the right like this: ( put the toothpick under the far lefthand side, in the middle and see if you can pry it up ,( I say use a tooth pick so not to scratch up your watch) it should flip over to the right.Check and see if there are any spring loaded buttons on either side of the clasp, if there is push them in ,and lift to your left If there is no buttons just pry up towards your left. If this dosn't work PLEASE let me know, and I will find the exact watch and we can go from there. Good luck!!
SOURCE: Replacing Batteries on Sealed Watches
Who ever told you that story about throwing it away should not be in the business of repairing watches. I have the same problem and googled Lucienpiccardusa.com. They do lifetime battery replacement and some general servicing according to your warrenty. From what I read on their web site you only pay for the shipping charges.
Hope this helps you. JFG
