A few possibilities:
hard drive plug came disconnected somehow
hard drive plug/wires are bad
hard drive is shot.

you may want to try to contact the manufacturer before attempting to open it to find the problem, if your hard drive is bad you will probably need to get the operating system/format programming to load onto a new hard drive. best bet is to find a contact for them and see if they sell replacement parts, my guess is the hard drive is bad. it happens, it sucks, and it can be expensive, the upside is if you are careful and take your time it is usually pretty easy to take the bad one out and put a nwe one in... good luck

VHS plays for 5 to 10 seconds then power switches off

I think you might have a problem with the VHS mechanism. Perhaps damage to the mechanical parts. If the mechanism can't perform the task it has been set after a very short period it will send a message to the electronics to shut down. This prevents further damage to the tape or system.

SAMSUNG HR733 DVD RECORDER WILL NOT PLAY ANY REGION DISCS AT ALL

On page 45 of the user manual it says this:

Both the HDD & DVD RECORDER and the discs are coded
by region. These regional codes must match in order for the
disc to play. If the codes do not match, the disc will not play.
The Region Number for this HDD & DVD RECORDER is
described on the rear panel of the HDD & DVD RECORDER

If you changed the region codes on your player it will not work. They should be set back to 1 or whatever your model says on the back of the unit.

If this unit was purchased outside the United States, it may not work in the United States.

Here is a copy of the manual if you need it:

Odd boot

A "hung" system usually tells you that you have registry problems and/or buggy drivers and can include a virus (It can also include a corrupt boot sector). Well, there's a easy fix for this and a really difficult fix for this...And then there's the reinstallation of Windows. Ok, the easy fix is to goto: Start -> Programs -> System Tools -> System Restore Run the restore program back to the time where you were having no problems. Voila! If it is a virus, this will not get rid of it as some of the viruses make their way into the system restore. Then there's the difficult way to do it which is kinda like the installation of Windows but instead you hit "repair" (This is known as the Recovery Console and it's in DOS just to warn you...) Then you can type the following at the dos prompt: fixmbr - Fixes corrupt master boot record fixboot - Fixes corrupt boot sector bootcfg /rebuild - Fixes corrupt or missing boot.ini
