Nikon d40
You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.
Nikon d40 Does have a black and white mode. It's in the shooting menu under vivid, more vivid etc...It is the last chioce.
You are better off taking pictures in color and converting them to BW in Photoshop or whichever image editing sofware you use. You will have much more control over the individual color channels when converted, allowing for a greater degree of manipulation as regards tone etc.
Sorry, the D40 is unable to shoot in BW mode as more advanced cameras can. However, using a program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, you can convert color .jpg's into BW images.

It sounds as if you have changed the viewing setting so that the camera highlights over-exposed/highlight areas of the image.
While playing back images, press the multi-selector (4 way cursor) up or down to cycle through the various options.
This should be explained on page 51 of the cameras manual.
Hope this helps.
Matt.

Like a flashing blotch? It might be the "hot spot" indicator, in which case its nothing to worry about. It just highlights hotspots in your image.
SOURCE: When viewing photos some white areas blink black on the lcd.
This is becasue those flashing areas are over exposed highlights. Reduce you exposure compensation a stop to capture those white areas. Increase your shutter speed or use a smaller aperture (f-stop) to let in less light. When you loose highlight detail in a digital image it is hard to reclaim back on a computer program.

Clean the contacts on the body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened in rubbing alcohol. See if that makes a difference.
