You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.

You are better off taking pictures in color and converting them to BW in Photoshop or whichever image editing sofware you use. You will have much more control over the individual color channels when converted, allowing for a greater degree of manipulation as regards tone etc.

Sorry, the D40 is unable to shoot in BW mode as more advanced cameras can. However, using a program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, you can convert color .jpg's into BW images.

SOURCE: Nikon D40 - Flashing black on the light/white areas of inside & outside pics

It sounds as if you have changed the viewing setting so that the camera highlights over-exposed/highlight areas of the image.

While playing back images, press the multi-selector (4 way cursor) up or down to cycle through the various options.

This should be explained on page 51 of the cameras manual.

Hope this helps.

Matt.

SOURCE: picture come out with black dot inthe middle of the picture

Like a flashing blotch? It might be the "hot spot" indicator, in which case its nothing to worry about. It just highlights hotspots in your image.

SOURCE: When viewing photos some white areas blink black on the lcd.

This is becasue those flashing areas are over exposed highlights. Reduce you exposure compensation a stop to capture those white areas. Increase your shutter speed or use a smaller aperture (f-stop) to let in less light. When you loose highlight detail in a digital image it is hard to reclaim back on a computer program.

SOURCE: says lens not attached when it is, pictures black

Clean the contacts on the body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened in rubbing alcohol. See if that makes a difference.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on

Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

When viewing a picture through the viewfinder,

I'm going to assume you're actually talking about viewing pictures on the monitor on the back of the camera and not in the viewfinder. If I'm wrong, please post a comment and say so.

You're looking at blown-out highlights. These are the portions of your pictures where you've lost all detail due to overexposure. Those portions of the picture are solid white, with no shading. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though often it is. You can correct this by using exposure compensation to reduce exposure.

That was the long answer. Here's the short answer: Press up/down on the multiselector to cycle through different views of your picture.

Blinking black in play mode!!!! PLEASEEEEE HELLLPP

Hello,

If this is the same as my Nikon this is the overexposed highlight display option.
This shows areas of the photograph that are overexposed slightly.

On my Nikon I use the up and down arrows on the back to cycle the LCD display options.
Stop when you get a display that does not flash.
