I'm at the point where I need to remove the mirror to get at the motor to oil it to stop the annoying screeching sound. The little omega symbol looking locking thing is impossible to remove. Is there a better way?
Not required to remove mirror to avoid abnormal sound. The mirror is a part in Laser scanner assembly to reflect the image on OPC drum in various angles depends on model. In your series 1200 having single mirrored scanner assembly mounted on top area. To remove this you need to remove right, left back & top covers.. The laser scanner protect with four screws & two connectors. Remove all take out the unit. For removing the bonnet single screw protection remove this screw, take out cover. Inside you can observe a motor with four faced reflector. While motor got the energy it will rotate, if motor lubes are dried up it will make noise, remove motor head gently,(to remove take out entire motor unit with PCB which protects three screws, you cab observe black 'U' shaped plastic lock unlock it & pull motor up, apply lube to rotor & refix it back, ref see the drawing, you want to clean the mirror? ear bud you can clean surface of the mirror gently..
But it is no so easy, bare hands you cannot handle the mirrors, If mirror disturbed its factory fitted angle its very difficulty to back its own position. Removing the motor also difficulty, motor head carrying 4D reflector, while removing any scratches, or finger prints will damage the quality of prints some times scanner error appears..

SOURCE: Is it possible to take mirror image printing using by HP Laserjet 1022
That works as the Driver and application( End user is using) settings.
This can be done from software not hardware.
SOURCE: My HP Laserjet 1200 is screeching constantly
Probably the laser-mirror motor. It will screech until the load gives a error and the printer shows error/ is dead.
However, the motor can be lubed. Remove sides, remove screws found, remove top cover. Remove and open the black box containing laser. Remove motor board and lube the motor, dont get the mirror dirty. Asseble. Total time 15min...

Sorry, it's old, cranky, and worn out. Live with it, or buy a new one, it's not cost effective to fix it.
