WHAT IS GM TABS DEALING WITH COOLANT ON A CAR

The sensor is in the bottom of the coolant tank on the passenger side of the car. My low coolant light stayed on so I cut the wires and twisted them together. You cant buy just the sensor. You have to buy the whole tank. I dont have any coolant leaks so I just by passed the sensor.

Do you see a lot of white smoke rom the exhaust? If so, Head gasket. Check to see if the oil & coolant are mixing together, (ck the oil for coolant & the coolant for oil) . Its got to be going somewhere. Do you see any puddles after parked? SPEAK TO MANAGEMENT BEFORE YOUR WARRANTY EXPIRES. Good luck.

Hi, if you have searched this problem recently on this car you will find that there is an issue with this particular engine (3.4 litre) that GM used on various vans and SUV's and the DEX coolant that is reccomended for this engine. Apparently the coolant corrodes the aluminum parts (intake, gaskets) causing them to deteriorate faster. I have had the unfortunate experience with this issue. First it was diagnoised as a cracked lower intake- car was leaking oil. Had that fixed but overheating issues persisted. Tried flushing the coolant but that only solved the problem for a few weeks and overheating started again, and coolant was boiling over in the reservor. Finally took it to GM (was having my own mechanic fix it prior to this) and they just called to say the gaskets are leaking into the combustion chamber and that is a $2000 (canadian) job. IF they find that one, or both the gaskets (there are 2) are also cracked (unlikely that both would be cracked) it is a $3000 job. I am considering trading in my car to the GM dealership. Only offerring $2000 for trade in as is. My advise is get your car to a GM service shop so the problem is properly diagnosed. I was told that I may have had this fixed under warranty if my vehicle dd not have 176,000 KM on it. Not sure if this is BS. Please connect with me here and let me know of your progress. I am stuck without a car and have a huge decision to make. I have been on tons of forums and there has not been one concrete solution that I found prior to taking it in to GM.

well, coolant mixed into your oil is terrible. it breaks down the oil.Before you do anything expensive you could try GM cooling system sealing tabs. Or another off brand from a parts store. GM came out with these tabs when they realized they had weak intake gaskets in there vehicles. They seemed to work rather well. Just because they are a GM product doesn't mean you cant use it in other makes. And change the oil as soon as possible! maybe a couple times.

50/50 antifreeze and water. pontiac or GM recommends the use of Dex cool antifreeze but it really doesnt matter. You have to check the color of the coolant orange you need to use extended life, if its green just use regular 50/50

Check your coolant level. This will happen when air passes through your system; the engine will heat up rapidly, and the heater will go away. You do not want to run it that way, otherwise you'll be dealing with severe engine damage. If your coolant level is good by chance, you may have to look at replacing your water pump, thermostat, or both, but I'm confident that your are dealing with a coolant issue.

your intake manifold gaskets need changed. gm made these gaskets out of plastic. buy a good set from autozone or oreillys. i had the exact same problem.

I had the same problem and they suggested that I add GM tabs to the collant system to keep it from and very slow and tiny leak. They added the tabs and the low coolant light stopped.

there are two types of coolant that were used in your car: your coolant bottle or cap may have a orange or green dot on it.

Orange dot = DEXCOOL
Green dot= Eythelene gycol (green stuff)

All the 97' and UP had dexcool. 96' was the transistion year, some one way some the other.
