Loosen the inner nut on the trolley. (That is the lock nut). Then tighten the outer nut on the trolley to increase tension. The outer nut on the trolley is closest to the garage door. The chain tension should be 1/2 inch off the rail at midspan. (The chain is fastened to a threaded bolt on to the trolley. The threaded bolt has an inner and outer nut). Hope this helps.

I have a Acess Master 1/3 HP garage door opener. i need to tighten the chain, can anyone tell me how this is done?

The adjustment for the chain is done at the back side of the trolley. A 1/2 inch open end wrench will do the trick.

My 1/3 hp craftsmen door opener just hums when you hit the wall button or remotes in the car. I replaced the starter motor capacitor and nothing changed any ideas?

Is the door stuck in the open position? If so the trolley is probably jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Loosen the chain until the tension is removed from the trolley. Run the motor until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' adjustment on the side of the motor unit and turn this 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Garage door doesn't open and close properly

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

Craftsmen garage door is not opening. It started

Your drive gear must be stripped. Remove the cover and you will most likely find lots of what looks like white sawdust and a stripped gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 if you want to replace it and it comes with instructions. Available at any good door opener service company.

I recently replaced the gear drive on my craftsmen chain drive opener. However, now the opener only moves a couple of feet and then returns back. adjustments dont work. What is the problem?

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

You should also loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor. Now with the door closed and everything else attached run the motor until it runs clockwise and stops. Replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will be required.

My i/2 hp crafstman chain drive opener stops about a foot from the floor i got it up and noticed the chain was sagging about a foot below the bar how dow I tighten the chain

The adjustment for the chain is on the trolley. That is the part the chain and the door are connected to. Your chain is sagging entirely too much. Have you done any other work to this opener?

Need a manual for sears model 139.18856, 1/2

According to Sears your model number is bad. Double check the number and they will have the owners manual with complete installation instructions.

Garage door chain is sagging

If the chain is adjusted properly the chain will sag slightly on one side when the door is closed and on the other side when it is open. It should not sag enough that it is dragging on the T-rail. You can adjust it at the trolley. If you over tighten it you will hear a clicking sound when the opener opens or closes.
