To open an Excel spreadsheet, you need a program that understands the .xls format. You can get the free Excel Viewer from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10 . This is the latest version and will work with computers running Windows XP through Win7. There is a Mac OSX version available but I'm not sure of the URL. If you have an older OS, you can try searching for an older version of the Viewer.

Another option is to install any office suite that includes a spreadsheet program or just the spreadsheet program. Microsoft sells Office in several versions and you can buy Excel separately. There are several other spreadsheet and office suite software options that will also read Excel files. Open Office and LibreOffice are both free office suites which can read any Excel file. (www.openoffice.org and www.libreoffice.org ) Open Office and LibreOffice have versions that work under almost any OS.

I hope this helps.

Hyperlink other document in excel button

The easy way (but labor intensive) is to put the file names in a column (can be any name you want or the pdf file name), right click on a cell, hit insert hyperlink, and in the address field at bottom, put in the file pdf file name. You would have to do this for each of your 100 files.

If you want to automate it, create a column with the directory path name, a 2nd column with the full file names, a 3rd column where you concatenate the two previous columns to create the full path, and then use the hyperlink command to provide the link:

Folder name Filename Concatenated LINK ../excel/ file1.pdf ../excel/file1.pdf file1.pdf ../excel/ file2.pdf ../excel/file2.pdf file2.pdf ../excel/ file3.pdf ../excel/file3.pdf file3.pdf

Here are the formulas behind this:
A B C D Folder name Filename Concatenated LINK ../excel/ file1.pdf =CONCATENATE(A2,B2) =HYPERLINK((C2),B2)
../excel/ file2.pdf =CONCATENATE(A3,B3) =HYPERLINK((C3),B3)
../excel/ file3.pdf =CONCATENATE(A4,B4) =HYPERLINK((C4),B4)
This should work like a charm and the other advantage is that excel won't rename your path locally depending on weather a file is open or not).

Do you have a formula in Microsoft Excel that a value can convert to a word...(Ex. 15,000 then it will convert to in words fifteen Thousand..)thanks. need immediate reply.

Hi enelrah_mel0,

You can create a function called SpellNumber using the Visual Basic Editor in the Microsoft Excel to spell the number.

  1. Please Open Microsoft Excel. Then press Alt + F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
  2. Then, click "Insert" option above the Visual Basic Editor window and select "Module".
  3. Then, in the Book1 Module1 (Code) window, paste the below code there. (pasted in the next post separately for your convenience)
  4. Then, press Alt+Q to close the Visual Basic Editor window.
  5. After that, please type the formula " =SpellNumber( * )" in the Excel Sheet and press the Enter Key.
  6. Then, save the Excel Sheet.
eg: =SpellNumber(A1)

Where A1 is the first cell in the excel sheet.

Good Luck!

Please post back the result and let me know if you require further assistance.

Thanks for using Fixya.

How can I change work written in Microsoft Word Office and put on a CD so that it can be opened up on a MAC computer? I have written two books about my life. One is based on my life from 1929 to 1984 and...

The two of you may be running different versions of Microsoft Word,
with you having created some documents in a "newer" version than she is using.

The solution: open each document, and click "File" and then "Save As".
Under the "file name" input-area, there is a "save as type" pull-down.
Choose "rich text format". Save the file.

The "RTF" ("rich text format") was designed to be _highly_ portable,
without losing the text-formatting that you have done,
and she should have no problems with reading RTF files into Word.

PROBLEM OF PRO11.MSI

Go to start menu, run, then type 'excel' and hit enter, the installation menu will start but you can just cancel it. To me, the installation will start again and again but I cancel it as Book 1 excel already opens. Then you can double-click any excel file that you want and open it. It worked for me! :)
