Gateway 7320GZ restore problem

I have the restore DVD and it FREEZES I read somewhere I need to reset the BIOS and disable the hyperthreading.. can you walk me thru the steps to do this???
It is not the HD .. if I try to load a differnt XP CD (from Dell) it will load all the way thru and allow me to use windows ..temporarily ..just wont let me authorize the license.. so I think its the CD from GATEWAY.. BUT they have sent me 2 separate CDs or DVDs and same issue..

Are you able to do a system restore back before the upgrade which I am almost sure you did right, take the computer back in time to the upgrade you were able to do with it, like if you had xp upgrade to vista, you don't need the 16 digit number, if this is windows that is, if this is a gateway computer this of course wont work.

SOURCE: DVD Rom Drive Won't Play Some CDs...

Couple of possiblilities. Hardware or software.

You can go here to get the latest drivers for your system , just put in the serial.

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp

Or here

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/ddaStep.asp?platform=10022&model=10651&os=&type=&st=browse

If it is listed correctly in the system , it is probably starting to fail. You can try cleaning the laser lens GENTLY with a cotton swab and alcohol.
Also you can try and flash the firmware of the drive. The format of DVDs change slightly over time sometimes making newer ones unreadable. Here is a site with flash utilitys for your drive.

http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GSA4082N

If you still have issues , you may need to replace the drive. Cheapest one I could find was $179

http://www.notebookparts.com/products/description.php?II=11272

Might be cheaper to go with an external one if you can get one cheap.

Good luck!

SOURCE: I need the bios and flash program for a gateway

There is no such thing as a BIOS virus. However, there are such things are boot sector viruses. Before you reinstall XP again, wipe the hard drive completely by deleting and recreating the primary partition.

RECOVERING GATEWAY LAPTOP WITH RESTORE DISC WE BOUGHT BUT IT FREEZES WHEN IT GETS TO THE WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SECTION

I grabbed this from another site. It worked fantastic, give it a try and it might fix your problem, I know it helped me tones after spending nearly 2 days playing with a similar sounding problem as yours.

Gateway Laptop Freezes during System Restore
Had the same problem, turns out it's a well known issue to Gateway and Microsoft it's due to "SpeedStep" and it must be disabled. Here's the chat log with Gateway tech support:

do these steps to disable SpeedStep in the BIOS Setup Utility and then run System Restore again on your computer.
1. Turn on the computer and begin pressing the F2 key in one-second intervals. If you perform this step correctly, you see the BIOS Setup Utility menu. If Windows loads normally, repeat this step.

2. In the BIOS Setup Utility, press the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Advanced menu.

3. On the Advanced menu, change the Intel SpeedStep setting from Enabled to Disabled.

4. Press the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Exit menu.

5. On the Exit menu, select Save Changes and Exit

6. Restart the computer and run System Restore.

7. After completing the restore, download and install the Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626) package from the Microsoft Web site.

8. Once the KB885626 package is installed, re-enable Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS Setup Utility.

Myself...I am not going to turn SpeedStep back on it caused me enough time and hassle that I don't want to take a chance that it will screw something else up.
Hope that helps anybody that finds this issue too. I got here by Googling but didn't find a fix anywhere on the net until I chatted w/ Gateway. And if the Laptop was not under warranty, they wouldn't have talked to me. Sad that it's a well know issues and one cannot even search their site for "a known issue"
Good Luck!

Laptop shutting off

There might be a setting in the BIOS that shuts down the computer when the processor gets too hot. so, getting better cooling or turning off the setting will stop it. but, if you disable the setting, the Processor could overheat and explode.

System Recovery Problem

Phillynoy was right on! I have been fighting with the recovery and restoration hanging. When I read Phillynoy's comment about the optimal speed setting, I called Gateway. The tech said she would be glad to tell me how to change those settings for $59 tech fee (first 30 minutes). So I decided to look in the bios and there it was under Advanced. Change to disable the optimal speed and the computer has finally completed the installation! Praise God!
