I have seen similar problems (features?) with Syntax LCD TVs. One thing to try is to make sure that the backlight brightness is set to its highest setting. On my Syntax, when this is set to a darker setting, it produces annoying hum through the speakers. Mine also is smart about turning *off* the audio amplifier when set to zero (or mute), which sounds like the behavior you are describing.
I had a real bad humming noise .. rendered it useless.. I took it all apart no blown caps... So I figured to take a look at the main board. The big board with all the capacitors is the power board. The board under the silver shiny thing is the main board.. 1 capacitor on it not blown. So i took my eye loop (magnifier) and looked for a cold solder joint. All good But when i looked at a few solder connections there were 2 spots with foreign substance shorting out pins. I removed the 2 spots of foreign substance and it now works like a charm. I would have taken pictures but I put it all together and tested it to make ure . Too lazy to take it apart to take pictures. If you take a picture let me know I'll point it out to you.

TV has humming sound when played through side speakers. I returned the set to get it repaired but they were not successful in solving the problem.
