Error 70 on Brother printers usually means the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly is out of position or very dirty. I would remove the top cover to correct the error and/or you might also find a scrap of paper either on the extreme right or left stopping the carriage from moving properly.

Open the scanner cover and look on the left,
middle and right hand side under the covers for
foreign objects and paper scraps. Then, disconnect the
machine from the power for several minutes and
then reconnect it.
