Black Screen/Viewfinder One minute my Canon SD100 Elph took a picture, the next minute the screen was black and any picture I take is black. When I scroll through my photos, I can see the previous good pictures on my card, and then it shows the black screen photos just like any other picture as I scroll through. I didn't change any settings--as I said one minute it took a regular picture and then the next picture I took a few minutes later it was all black. It's not a flash issue--I can see nothing but black on the view screen even in sunlight. The user manual doesn't list this problem in the troubleshooting section. I've tried turning off, charging battery, replacing battery, etc. The camera turns on and I can see the good pictures on my memory card--they show normal on the screen--so it's not the battery, just the screen is black for any new photos when it's in camera mode. Any ideas on whether this is fixable are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I found the solution to my problem. Look up on Cannon under Support, Service Advisories http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro... Sounds like this is my problem--a malfunction with the CCD image sensor. I called the 1-800 number and cannon emailed me a UPS shipping label to send in my camera to have the CCD replaced for free. Even though my camera is no longer under warranty (it's 3+ years old), they'll still fix it!
I'll let you know if it works when I get it back.

The camera turns on but the screen is black. Thought the screen might be faulty, so took a picture and the picture is black. The screen will show previous picture taken.

Nothing in viewfinder screen

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensors used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST). Alternatively, if electronic support is preferred, please send your email to [email protected]
