Did you "format" as part of changing your settings? Format reformats the disk - it has nothing to do with the format of the image files. If you formatted the disk, you will have to use image recovery software to restore the files. If this is the case, DO NOT do anything more with the disk until you try the image recovery software, as anything you do (take more photos, or make any more changes on the camera) reduce the chance of recovering your missing photos.
If you need help with the steps for image recovery, leave a followup comment and I'll give you more details and links.

I do not think I reformated the disk. I read what format did, but never went to the item in the menu until I was researching for what could have happened to the pictures.I did not ok the reformat when I did look @ it, I used SET to CANCEL it. HOWEVER, I have taken one picture since I discovered they were all missing. It does show when I press the play button, but it does not show the date, time or number. As I read the User Guide, the new picture should carry on with the next number for the picture, even if I did reformat the disc because I have it set on the continuous option for "file number" in the Set Up Menu. I will try the steps for image recovery with your help with the details and the links. THANK YOU, kathya
