I was sewing some jeans when my thread bunched up and broke. I cleaned out the bobbin area and put the bobbing back in, but then the needle would no longer catch the bobbin thread and in the bobbin area, something was hitting the needle. I don't know if this is a timing issue or if there is something else I can do. If it IS timing, how do I fix it??

I assume you checked to see there are no needle bits in the bobbin case holder.
Without looking at the machine it is difficult to diagnose the problem. It could be any one or a combination of problems, timing, needle bar height, damage to the hook and base etc.
I strongly suggest you have it looked at by a sewing machine tech.
