Technically the phone scratches easily but personally I haven't had any issues with scratching on my Black iPhone 5. Numerous torture tests (which can be found on YouTube by different users) show the iPhone 5 is pretty good at handling scratches, but then again some users have had the scratching problem. So it's all up to luck I guess, but I really don't hope you let this deter you from the phone because it is a fantastic smartphone by Apple.
