Check inside the green guide (sensor) for pieces of label. That will block the sensor. If the sensor is reporting a thickness which is double (250) what you expect, then that is definitely the issue.

Printer ribbon has a wrinkle and it transfers to the label in the form of a blank line accross the ribbon.

position fault is normally a problem with either the formatting or the printer is not calibrated correctly.
Hold the feed button down until at least 3 labels pass by the sensor.
Also check to see the sensor is directly over the die cut on the label if more than 1 up label

Re-calibrate the printer. If still not working, take out the ribbon assembly by removing 3 screws and check the sensor ( "L" shaped plastic glass). If still not working, buy a new ribbon assembly.

SOURCE: hello, i have a datamax i

The error is indicating that it cannot calibrate the media. Try holding in the feed key for approx 10 seconds and see if it will calibrate. Experiment with the position of the media sensor. It will slide horizontally.

I HAV A DATAMAX I-CLASS PRINTER IT IS SAYING THAT I HAVE A RIBBON FAULT AND THE PRINTER IS THERMAL

Thermal can mean "Direct Thermal" (no ribbon) or "Thermal Transfer" (with ribbon). If you want to print using Direct Thermal labels you need to select Direct Thermal from Media Settings in the Menu accessed from the Control Panel on the front of the printer. Otherwise, the printer sensors will look for a ribbon that is not there, and you will see an error message.

Ribbon fault

Hold in the Feed button for 4-5 seconds, which causes the printer to attempt to "Auto-calibrate." If that doesn't solve it, then slide out the Media Sensor (green plastic bar that sticks out over the labels) about 1 inch from all the way in ("in" = left if looking from front). Then press Feed to clear errors. If still get same error, then look for piece of label or ribbon stuck in that error - ok to blow out with canned air. Then try holding in Feed again for 4-5 seconds to Auto-calibrate again.

Errors= head cleaning fault. position fault

head cleaning fault, you need to remove the option for head cleaning.
The position fault may be due to either a wrong label size, wrong detecting sensor selection or your printer sensors needs callibaration

My datamax thermal is not heating up

These printers do not "heat up" as such. Possible causes are:

1. Incorrect ribbon type for fitted ribbon spools. Look at back plate and see which way arrows are pointing. If arrows point Anti-clockwise, then you require inside wound ribbon (i.e. standard datamax) If pointing clockwise then you require outside wound (i.e. Zebra type ribbon). Check ribbons by touching sticky side of label to ribbon (it will transfer ink to label on print side).

2. Could also be faulty printhead, Logic board or Power supply. These will require an engineer to check properly.

Do you know the part number to order the ribbon or film?

After doing a little research, I can see why you are having a hard time figuring out the correct part number to replace the ribbon.

Here's what I found as a compatible ribbon on the CDW website:

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?edc=2066585&RecommendedFOREDC=320985&RecoType=AP&cm_sp=Product-_-ComplAcc-_-Datamax+Pioneer+GPR+Plus+-+print+ribbon

The Datamax website has a chart with Media and Ribbon Requirements for I-Class models on page 111 of the following online PDF:

http://www.datamaxprintingsolutions.com/corp/88224101_p.pdf

Hope this helps. You may also wish to get purchasing help from the sales agents at a company like CDW or Tiger Direct (CDW's number is (800) 800-4239
