Freezer is not keeping foods frozen

as cold air sinks to the lowest point it would have been operating a little longer that if it was closed I would think that it will be fine
example chest freezers in supermarkets only have plastic sliding lids and the ice creams and other frozen foods are still frozen

I do assume this is in Celcius.

-20C is about the right level for a three-star freezer.

Red light lit on freezer means that is not reaches operating temperature.

Most often the old freezer has three indicator lights.
- Green light : that it is brought to a power source and turned on - Red light : means that the temperature is above -18 degrees
- orange light : pressing the so-called SUPER-switch which means that the compressor is running continuously. The SUPER-button switch on a few hours before you begin deep-freeze foods. Freezing time depending on foods quantity (kg). With old freezer must be careful to turn off the switch S (orange light) when the red light goes out or when foods are frozen, otherwise after a few days may burn out the compressor. Check condenser clean and fan working. Check it's not frozen solid because you've been running it full pelt; if it is, fully defrost it then set it at a mid range setting.

remove the rear cover inside the freezer if it has a lot of frost on it,then the evaporator coil is frozen up and you cant blow cold air over or thru a solid block of ice,defrost it,then check the defrost heating element,defrost thermostat and timer or defrost circuitry for no power or defective components,you can use a hand held hair dryer to defrost it quicker

You'll need to get a blow dryer and then thaw it out so it can flow again. Move your frozen foods into the fridge while you do this. Let me know what happens. I might have another few ideas. Raz

If this freezer is running all of the time and only freezing the walls at the top inside it is a good chance there is deteriation in the piping in the walls eg (rusty pipes) letting the refridgerant escape (common fault) with chest freezers.If it is more than 7 years old it would be advisable to replace it as the repair would probably cost 3 quarters of replacement price.Hope this helps. Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) You said, the freezer is only keeping the food frozen on the botton of the freezee. It is cold, but only like a refrigerator.

What is tour brand,model number and the year or age of the fridge.

Listen for some type of noise from the back lower part of the freezer. This could indicate a problem with the compressor. It is not a fast fix problem. Get your frozen foods to a cold temperature. If the compressor is running and you are not getting the cooling your system could have lost its refrigerant charge. If the compressor is cool and not running check the temperature control. It may have failed. Unplug the power to the freezer and remove the temperature control. Jumper the two main wires that attach to the temperature control and insulate them with electrical tape. Plug the freezer back in and the compressor should start and cool. If this makes it run replace the thermostat.
