I'm 57 y/o and very illiterate about computers. I want to get web cams for my daughter and I; she has a son I've never met and he will be 4 on the 25th. I don't want to send them a headset, because then we can't all talk at once. So I thought about a microphone (the web cam I'm sending came with a headset). How does his work? From where will they hear me? I'm considering a Lifecam VX-1000 for myself. Also, is there anything more to be done that hook up the web cam and put in the software? Will it then work with a im service. Thank you so much.
Hi, First I would suggest you get a Microsoft Life Cam VX-3000 as it will install the easiest and has a mic built in. Then I would suggest you and your family download SKYPE as it is FREE to talk on using the computer. It allows oyou to connect with several family members. Only have to pay if you telephone anyone from the computer using Skype.
So download SKYPE from this site: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windows/beta/
and follow these instruction to setup your voice/video.

After you install Skype and have it operational
with you ID. Go to "TOOLS", click on "OPTIONS," Then go to
"Audio Settings" and click on it. Make sure both the Microphone and
Speaker's are correctly chosen. Then
"make a free test call." Wait till the voice tells you to
record. Then when finished talking wait for the test persons voice to
insure your audio transmission is working. Then go back to options and
test your video settings. Click on Video Settings and proceed to set up
you video camera. Also, you can Visit this site for additional
information to setup video.
