Waher fills and then quits, won't start the wash cycle
My washer will turn on and fill the tub with water fine, but then it just quits. It won't start the wash cycle. If you drop the lid really hard it will start it and run through the cycle about half the time. The other half it quits when you get to the rinse cycle. It won't restart at the rinse cycle by dropping the lid hard, you have to restart the whole entire cycle. My husband just installed a brand new lid switch and that did not help the problem. My washer is a Maytag top load with small, med, and large load size options. It has four temperature options, of cold-cold, warm-cold,hot-cold, and hot-warm. It has two cycle options, one of regular wash with time from 12-2 minutes and one of permanent press wash with time of 10-2 minutes and cool down rinse and rinse cycle. It has push buttons to select load size and temperature. It has one dial to select which wash cycle you want. It is just a turn dial you push in and turn to select the wash cycle and pull out to start. No digital. It was bought in late 1991 from a Maytag Appliance store. I can't find a model number on the washer. The front of it just says Maytag and then underneath that, Heavy Duty there is a small plate on the very top above the controls, that is about 1 " wide by about 21/2 " long and it has two sets of numbers on it. One number is LAT7300AAW and then the other number is AZ103872 FD. Any help you could give us would be appreciated. We are unable to purchase a new washer at this time and would prefer to try and fix this one if possible. Thank you, Vicki Wardell

If your machine fills but does not start the agitation cycle, the limit switch which detects that the lid is closed is probably defective. (Same as when the machine is washing, but you open the lid and it stops.) It's an inexpensive part to replace.
Hi,
Its sounds like you have a siphon going on, this happens when the drain hose it too low during fill and as the water enters the unit it exits through the drain hose. To stop this the drain hose needs to be higher than the tub itself, meaning: raise the drain hose behind the washer to about control panel area. This will or should stop the siphon effect and allow the water to remain in the tub. If the drain hose is low this siphon will start again.
I hope this helps
If your machine is a FAV6800AWW or FAV9800AWW the (upside down u and f) may be a “NF” for no fill error. The washer has tried to fill the machine with water and has sensed a water fill issue. The control board has shut the wash cycle down with an “NF” error to the display because of excess time to complete the water fill portion of the wash cycle. Will the machine complete the cycle with Hot water only or Cold water only?I would do a Quick Wash cycle just to test with an empty wash basket. Regardless of the above test and assuming you have good water pressure for both Hot and Cold supplies to the washer I would do the following. Close the water source valves to the washer and remove the Hot and Cold hose connections at the back of the machine and check for clogged inlet screens. If the water inlet screens are free of restrictions I would go into Service Mode and turn on the Hot and Cold water valves on one at a time and make sure the tub will fill with about 2 inches of water in about 3 minutes in service mode.Check both Hot and Cold inlet valves individually see page 16 of the SM Board Output Test, enter service mode and do the function test for both Hot and Cold Water Valve’s.If the inlet screens are clean and you have water fill restrictions in service mode we may need to look at replacing the water inlet valve assembly. You can turn on the drain pump in service mode to empty the tub or just start a wash cycle and the machine will empty the tub. The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.
it will fill but won,t spin, will throw out water as if it washed, then it take water to rinse but won,t spin ,then will throw out water as if it did , but clothes are soaked
quite possiblethat the tub itself is sitting to far foward, this machine fills from the back section above the tub, very possible as it fills its deflecting off the tub cover and unto the floor
water can leak from the other valve while filling up if you dont have the hose on it,if you blank the valve off with a nut and tail with a coin and rubber washer in it that will fix your problem.hope this helps.
There could be several causes for this, but probably a bad timer. One test for this...when it stops...is to turn it off...and turn the timer slightly clockwise...to the middle of the rinse cycle...and turn it back on. Does it run then?? Try advancing it to the spin cycle after the rinse. If it runs okay after you manually advance the knob...the timer is probably defective.
Thanks for identifying the model and serial number for us.
My husband fixed the problem with our washing machine by replacing the washing machine lid check switch.
