There is a filter on top of the motor as well. You will need to remove the plastic cover on top of the motor with a small screwdriver or other flat blade. On the front, you push in the clip and pull up ont he cover. On each side of the cover there is another clip - to pop those you put your flat blade into the angled tab and slide it around to the clip until it pops. Gently or you'll break the tab. Once the cover is off there is a purple tab in the center pull up and you will pull the HEPA motor filter out - similar in shape and size to the side, washable, filters. Clean or replace that.
Had the same problem 2 years ago. Washing filters only a short-term solution. After contacting Dyson, they replaced the shroud and cyclone under warranty. This cured the problem from July 05 until last week, when the motor has started to overheat again and cuts out on the high temperature safety trip. Mine is out of warranty now, so am unsure how to proceed. Maybe buy the parts they sent me before, but reckon they'll be expensive.
