Bleach tends to eat thru the paint and cause the rust. What I do on a call for this is to take the bleach cup out, sand the area and paint the area with appliance paint. Here is a link to the paint I use in case you want to do it. The only way to keep this from occurring again is try not to let the bleach get on the painted areas. I know this is hard to do on a washer but you can try to poor some water around the area of the bleach cup. If you should get the paint else where, be sure it is enamel appliance paint.

The lid to my whirlpool cabrio top loading washing machine will not open completely???

Hello. How old is your washer? Is there rust around the bleach dispenser near the left side hinge? What probably has happened is the hinge assembly underneath the top cover has rusted from the contact with chlorine and or fumes. These washers are notorious for rusting at the hinges, especially near the bleach dispenser. The parts involved are:
left hinge arm--w10389421
right hinge arm--w10389240
left hinge spring assembly--w10358931
right hinge spring assembly--w10358932
top cover--w10391067--if this needs to be replaced, call for service--it's a solid hour to 90 minute job for an experienced tech! You have to transfer ALL THE PARTS to the new cover and it's INVOLVED--trust me! If there is rust around the bleach dispenser and underneath the top cover, you might check your serial number with Whirlpool to see if you can get a new top cover for free covered by a service bulletin dealing with rusting. To raise the top cover, remove the top screws from the hinges on the rear of the washer holding down the top cover. Then, remove the screw and metal plate protecting the wire harness and pressure hose and set it aside. Next, from the front, slide the top cover forward 1/2 inch and lift up. Have a friend assist you in holding up the top cover. You can now access the hinges mounted underneath, check for rust, and also see how the suspension rods are mounted(they are very easy to remove since there is a slot in each rod holder located at each corner at the side of the tub near the bottom. You would pull up on the tub, release the top of the rods first, then reach down and unsnap the plastic clips(2) in the center of each holder. Use a headlamp or flashlight to see. The rod will drop down and can be removed through the slot. Reverse the procedure to install.
Also, in case your suspension rods get worn out(the tub has a hobby horse "bouncy" movement), the part number for the set of 4 is w10368625. The proper way to check the rods is to place your hands on the right and left side of the tub ring(the plastic cover over the basket) and shove smartly down and release--the tub should grip going down and pull coming up--no springy movement--just like shock absorbers on a car. It should come up and settle. If it has any bounce at all, the rods are worn--symptoms will be increased out of balance errors or the washer might start banging during spin. I hope this helps you. If you are hesitant about performing any of the repairs above, please call for service!

I have deep rust appearing around the bleach port. machine is only one year old. WHY is it rusting ?????

Samsung does not recommend the use of chlorine bleach in this machine. The bleach port is intended for color-safe bleach only. Chlorine bleach is an oxidizer that will accelerate the corrosion process of the drum, which is what you are probably seeing. The users guide for your machine states specifically that you SHOULD NOT put liquid chlorine bleach into the bleach port.

My Whirlpool keeps flashing and saying UL What does this mean?

UL means the load is unbalance. Open the lid and rearrange the clothes. If the problem continues, then the machine may have a problem caused by rust. If the unit still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for assistance on repairs.

If the appliance is out of warranty and you are a handyman (That works with safety), you may try a repair as indicated by a FixYa Tech:

"open the top of the machine (press in with a flat putty knife about 3" in on the front on each side while lifting up as there are 2- 1" wide catches). Once both sides are unlatched, raise the lid then slightly lift the rear of the lid so that it fits into the curved part at the top of the hinges then open all the way - tape the lid to the top so it doesn't flap about and scotch the lid to keep it from falling back down on you. Now, look around - see all that rust? The rust has fallen into and gotten underneath one or more of the 4 white plastic suspension "ball joints" which have probably totally dried out by now from their factory grease because of the water, bleach, and rust particles. Having someone help you, simply lift up on one of the 4 corner suspension rods - gravity and weight is all that holds them down. The white ball will lift out of the socket and still be attached to the rod. Clean out the rust, lightly sand the "socket" with emery cloth, then slop in a fingerful of grease. I used automotive wheel bearing grease with graphite in it. Also scrub off all embedded rust on the white plastic ball. Lower that corner back into the newly cleaned and greased socket and repeat for the other 3 corners. Now when you move the tub around notice how the balls pivot in their sockets like they are supposed to. When they were dry and rusty they wouldn't move enough to allow the tub to twist like it should so it slammed around. Now, shake your head in disgust that after only 2 years there is so much rust that you wonder if it will make it another year before falling apart, close the lid, and try another load."

Bleach despenser not working? soap and softener

Hello. Most likely your water inlet valve is the problem. If you are mechanically inclined you can change this yourself. That said, if your machine is less than two years old it is still under warranty. If so, call for service at Sears.com

RUST SPOTS

My 10 year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) top load washer is rusting under the top cover. The entire cover from the bleach dispenser all around is rusted under the lid. Periodically, rust dislodges into the tub and stains whites. You would have to treat the rust under the lid. I decided to try, using "Rust-mort" rust treatment on a rag. The rust would all have to be wetted with the rustmort after some scrubbing with a scuff pad. I have not attempted this yet.
I went to OSH and checked lids on new top load washers. The lip on the cheaper models was not properly coated with paint, and I could feel the rough partially exposed metal, which would rust. The more expensive models had a smooth well coated lip on the underside of the cover. Hope this helps.
