Yes, if the closed caption mode is turned on in 'text mode' the set will display a black box even when no closed caption text is available. the normal closed caption mode is cc1. try turning closed caption to cc1 or off. tech7

Why does a black box keep appearing on my screen?

The box is probably because you have closed-captioning turned on and set to "text" mode. Check the TV remote control for a button marked "CC" or "CAPTION" or something similar. Press the button to cycle through captioning options until you get to "OFF". This should clear up the trouble.

What's happening is that in text mode, the TV blanks out the area on the screen where the text should go, but there's nothing to display. Text mode isn't widely used, but in some markets it's used to display weather or other information. What sometimes happens is that the caption button on the remote gets pressed and you don't know the TV is set to text mode until the box starts coming up. And it doesn't happen on every channel, or even all the time on the same channel, so it can seem very random.

A black box appears on the screen blocking the view. how do i get rid of it?

Turn off the TV's closed-captioning. It's set for "text" now and that's why the box sometimes shows up. Your remote control probably has a single button to control caption settings, and got pressed at some time. It's easy to do and confusing when it happens.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

I have a black box appearing on the bottom half of a 13" Magnavox television on only one channel. Can you tell me how to remove it?

Do you have the closed captioning on? Sometimes if it is in text mode, it will show up as a back box on the bottom on some stations, but not on others.

If you haven't already, view the station that has the black box on another tv to see if it was the station or just the tv. It may just be a station thing. It happens sometimes when they edit for a newscast and it accidentally comes up on screen.

At random a black retangular box appears on the screen

Go into the TV's closed-caption settings and turn off captioning. You'll find it's set for "text" mode right now. What's happening is that in text mode, the set blanks out the part of the screen where the text will go but there isn't any. On channels or programs where captions aren't being broadcast you don't see anything. With the captions turned off the box will go away.

Black box appears in television screen

That's the captioning box, alright. Check through the options on your menu, or read through your owner's manual to get rid of that. There also should be a captioning key on your remote.

Black box comes up on tv screen

The black box is a text box for closed captioning. Some stations send the signal which turns on the box while not actually broadcasting any text. Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning, or at least change it to a different mode. The easiest option is to restore factory presets.

Turning off Closed Captioning

On the 27" TruFlat the closed caption button is hidden within the DVD buttons. You have to press it multiple times to shut off closed caption. It seems to have multiple sources for closed captions. Press the button until no source appears on the screen. ITS CONTROLED AT THE REMOTE CONTROL - NOT ON THE ON-SCREEN TV MENUS. Good Luck

Black Rectangle appears on bottom half of screen

Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning. The box is there for some channels even though no text is being sent. If you need to keep the closed captioning, try selecting a different mode for it.
