Maytag Ice20 refrigerator

The lights on the control panel blink constantly and the flap on the ice dispenser opens and shuts over and over, but no ice or water can be dispensed and none of the controls will respond. The refrigerator will no longer maintain the correct temperatures for the fresh food or the freezer.

Mine started doing the same thing early this past Sunday morning (10/18/07). Of course its 2 months after the warranty expired. I think a class action suit should be filed to address Maytag's refusal to recognize a known issue with their product. I believe it is reasonable for a person to expect that an appliance costing nearly $3000. should last a little longer than 14 months.

Warranty expired October 16th. Today, 12/09, the control panel blinks and the flap opens and closes relentlessly. Is this an all to common problem? What to do?

L ghts on control panel are blinking, and the ice dispenser flap is flapping, can't get water or ice to dispense. Temperature may not be maintaining.

We bought our maytag refrigerator May, 2006 we had it 19 months and the control board is constant blinking and flap on the ice maker open and closing. You would think maytag would take pride in their products.

This is not a cheap refrigerator, and i think they should recall and fixed these units before others have this problems.. Here it is three days before Christmas and our refrigerator is making this much noise / no ice and water....

we had a whirlpool before it was 14 years old never had a problems wish I would have went back with the same unit, we got rid of it because we were remodeling.....Big mistake...................The Howard"s

Having the same problem with our Maytag Frig. I think our warranty just expired a few days ago. Here it is Xmas Eve so we will not be able to get it fixed until after the holidays. Guess we will have to put up with the annoying sound it is making from the ice machine flapping.

Same issue started last night. What is the solution and cost?

  • jpurdon Dec 31, 2007

Ditto. 3 months past warranty and this annoying flapping noise started up tonight. Have a 2-10 home warranty and they are sending someone to fix it...hopefully. I also hate the freezer space on this thing.

Lights on panel blinking & shoot for water & ice constantly opening & closing.

  • Anonymous Jan 09, 2008

Same problem. Jan 6, 2008. Suddenly heard what we thought was popping or arching turned out to be the ice door popping and the lights flashing. It goes back to " normal" every 10 mins and then starts up again. Will try the temp repair as we also contact Lowe's.

Same Problem, Flashing Lights , Flapper opening and closing

  • Anonymous Feb 20, 2008

Fridge is 14 months old and not under warranty anymore. Control panel on front is constantly flashing and the ice flap is steadily opening and closing. Ic and Water dispenser does not work. The only 'fix' i have come up with for the short term is to stuff a tea towel up the hole to quieten the flapping. Lowes has no record of my purchase and I cant find receipt. Furious about it. Any ideas??

Hi, I feel the pain now. I have the same problem with th eblinking lights in the control panel and the refrigirator is not cooling. I called an appliance company who sent a tech to my home. Based on his research, experience, etc and my web reseach, we decided to replace the circuit board on the left door. Of course, it did not work. I still have the blinking light problem and I do not have a fridge now. I keep purchasing ICE to get milk at home for my kids. Anyway, I hope that by replacing the board in the back on the fridge, the problem will be solved. I will NEVER buy a Maytag product again. I never had a problem with the GE appliances.

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2008

I too am having the same problem. The fridge is appx 15 mths old. I heard a constant thumping sound, and went to the kitchen to find out what it was. All of the lights were blinking, and the ice chute was opening and closing. I tried to unplug and turn off the breaker for about 15 minutes. Of course it didn't work. I called the Maytag line in the owner's manual, and was sent to Whirlpool call center. (800) 688-9900. The lady I spoke to was very familiar with this problem, and stated that they are repairing this for no cost to the customer. They are overnighting the part, and have set up the service call for 2 days out. I hate that this happened, but I am truly glad that they are repairing it for free since I am out of warranty.

  • adakota Mar 21, 2008

Guess what? I have the same problem as every one else! Maytag seems to be aware of this problem. Will call them when they open this morning.

First the ice maker stopped working for about two weeks and then started again. Then the water and ice dispenser stopped working all together. Now the whole display flashes on and off and the ice flap opens and closes. We have an extended warranty with Home Depot and they won't come for a week. I will try the Whirlpool number. Thanks everyone for their input on this problem.

having the same exact problem with lites going crazy and flap opening and closing. you can take the plastic piece on top of the door with water dispenser off its only 1 screw then just unplug dispenser. fridge will keep factory temps w/out that on at least while your waiting for part to come you wont have to listen the noise

  • suzymac May 09, 2008

I can't believe what is going on with this product! When we bought our Ice20 in Nov. 2006, we thought we had purchased the Ferrari of refrigerators and were very pleased. It was large and roomy and we loved it. Then the deli door kept popping off and after futile attempts to fix it we just said to hell with it and left it off. Then the freezer door handle started coming loose. Then last week, the thing went berserk. Control panel started flashing and the ice door flap kept opening and closing continuously. We turned it off to "reset" it thinking one of our kids had touched something, but that only lasted for about 10 minutes before the fridge resumed it's symphony of clacking. Our warranty expired and Lowe's has no record if we purchased an extended warranty and we can't find the receipt from 16 months ago! Water started dripping from the ice door opening, but we nipped that in the bud by emptying the ice maker and shutting it off. However, the fridge won't hold temp and we're losing all of our food. The freezer seems to be keeping it's temp, but just to be safe we moved that food to our smaller stand up freezer. Calling Lowe's service department was a nightmare as their primary concern was trying to hook me up with a repair center a zillion miles from my house. And I can't believe when I went online to see if the product had a recall, how many of us "suckers" were duped by this shoddy Yugo in a Ferrari body!!!! We ended up calling our local Appliance repair shop who ordered the part we need, but the amount we're spending to fix this thing we could easily buy a cheaper fridge and stick this in the shed. Maytag should be ashamed of themselves for not recalling this product. $2600 is a lot of money to spend on a refrigerator and it should not be breaking within two years!!!

Exact same problem, very frustrating. They should have a switch somewhere that you can at least shut off the front panel. This happened on Thursday night and I cannot get a repair person until Monday. Had to unplug the entire fridge so there goes the food. I cannot see a means to take off the panle to look inside. There are 2 screws by the drip tray but after removing those it would not come off. Can someone help with this?

  • eyranch Jun 20, 2008

I also have the same issue, ice door flapping and lights flashing. Is there any thing I can do until the service man arrives? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Anonymous Oct 10, 2008

I wish I would have known before purchasing the Maytag ICE20, we experienced the same issue the other night while eating dinner, funny noise from the refrigerator, only to find the damper door flapping open then close and the lights on the dispenser flashing, I immediately tried to unplug and replug in, thinking it would reset....that didn't work. I looked in the owners manual bu nothing about that...signed on to the internet, ole reliable for informationand found this blog, was able to find a solution to making it stop until we were able to have it repaired. Spoke to Whirlpool and they are aware of this problem. they are send a new part Fedex and the repair man in 2 days to instal and fix....FOR FREE ! No mention of warranty or anyhing, even though mine is expired...

Thanks, Solution #3, for the phone number ((800) 688-9900)! We, too, have the Ice2O refrigerator, and the HV Board started the disco light show last night. Followed instructions above to disable it, which temporarily solved the problem. Was on the phone with Maytag (Whirlpool?) this AM, and their initial response was that they wouldn't cover anything since we are out of warranty. I had to be extremely firm with my expectation that all parts and labor would be covered. Sent the rep back to her supervisor several times until they agreed to cover both. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don't give up until everything is covered. This is a design issue that should NOT be impacted by an expired warranty!

Call (800) 688-9900. Whirlpool has bought out Maytag. This is the number listed in the owner's manual. They are very aware that this is a widespread problem, and are owning up to that fact. They are sending the replacement part overnight, and have scheduled the service tech to come out the day after. Even though I am out of the warranty period, there will be no charge to me. Please make sure that you have your serial number and model number when you call.

I had this exact problem on Christmas Night. After a lot of research, I found that the only solution is to replace the HV board located behind the Water/Ice dispenser. Maytag is covering parts and labor on this even if the unit is out of warranty (mine is). Call Maytag Customer Service and be sure to tell them that your understanding is that the parts and labor are free, even after warranty. They will want the model and serial #s located inside the fridge on the right side. A temporary reprieve to the flapping and flashing can be done by lifting the tray and removing the 2 hex screws in the dispenser. Gently pull out at the bottom and lift up to remove the dispenser and unplug the 2 wire harnesses on either side of the board. I called yesterday (Dec 26) and they are coming to fix it tomorrow morning (Dec 28). Good Luck !!!

I also had this problem. After some miscommunication between myself, Maytag Dependability Plus and Maytag Warranty, I was sent a new panel at no cost. I was told to contact them upon receipt of the part to schedule service. When the part arrived I was told 2 weeks for a repairmen to get to me. So, I used a 1/4" socket to remove the approx. 10"x10" bright metal panel on the rear of the fridge. Pulled the electrical power cord out of the outlet unplugging the power to the fridge. Removed the clear plastic cover over the circuit board. Unplugged the 4 connections to the board by depressing the small tab on each connection. Pushed the 2 white plastic clips up/down to release the circuit board. Installed the new board and connected it. Then, followed the directions in the bag the new board came in to program it. The code is located inside the fridge -upper right side by the way. It took a couple attempts to get the code in the system. Buttoned it all back up and vacuumed behind the fridge. Took 10 minutes. You do need to have enough heft to move the fridge around, a 1/4" wrench and the ability to almost program a VCR. The fridge will not operate until the code is set. Hope this helps someone.

There's a very detailed guide explaining how to fix this yourself for about $5 in parts. Some basic experience with soldering is helpful.

My Maytag dealer did not offer to fix for free, so I resorted to doing it myself rather than spend $300-$400.

I have a question. I just put some towels down the ice chute and turned the breaker back on. The lights were going even more crazy. I pulled the towel out some and now the lights are completely off...I am assuming the firdge is still running though. Did the fridge keep cooling when others had this issue. Just want to know if I should find alternate placed for my food.

Follow up to our Ice20 debacle. Called our local appliance repair shop who said they would have to order the part and suggested we call Maytag anyway. We called them they said fine they would fix it for free (didn't even ask about a warranty..yay!!) and sent us the replacement part in two days. However, the repairman they were going to send never came to install it. Our repairman had already ordered the part so we couldn't unorder it and he was out two days later to fix the fridge. Now my fridge is back to it's perfect working order, but I still have the replacement part that Maytag sent us. Don't know if I should sell it on Ebay or keep it until Mr. Yugo H20 decides to go crazy again!

My husband discovered our 16 month old Maytag going beserk this morning--all control lights flashing and flapping of dispenser door. I started research on the net after we quickly determined the owners' manual was useless. Glad I found this site. I quickly emailed a complaint to Maytag and will call them on Monday. I have also contacted our local repair guy. In the meantime, I decided to dismantle the panel as described in Island Dog's solution #4. I was glad to be able to do this since I was concerned about a possible fire hazard. I also emptied the ice tray and turned off the water to the dispenser. I just hope the compressor still runs and keeps everything cold until we can get this fixed. If I can't get the replacement part free, I am going to try the self fix in solution #9. So glad I found this site. Thanks everyone! Oh, I'll never buy a Maytag product again. I also have a frontloader Maytag washer/dryer. The washer had a control panel problem the week it was installed. At least that was under warrenty.

Having same problems with lights blinking and flap opening and closing. The only solution I can offer is, for people considering to purschase a refrigerator, do not purschase a Maytag.

One night we were awakened to find the light show and flapping ice door going crazy in our kitchen. After searching a bit on the internet, I tried to unplug and plug in the fridge in vain attempts at "resetting" the fridge. I ended up stuffing a bunch of paper towels in the ice chute and takling it the next morning. I went to bed witht he sick feeling I would be buying a new fridge very soon. Much to my suprise I found the instructions in "solution 7" in the above posts. So knowing this, I went into work with this on my mind all day. I called and talked to mayfag and they assured me they would overnight a replacement part and schedule a service man to come install it. Great, I thought all was fixed. Then I get a call back stating the service man was booked, and wouldn't be able to come for TEN DAYS. Not acceptable to say the least. Well I got nowhere on the phone, and so I took a trip to radio shack. Came home, soldered in the capacitors, and she was up and running like new in 13 minutes start to finish. I kept the new board just in case the old one goes out again! THANK YOU to the link and post in "solution 7"The fridge has been running strong for over four months now on the board I fixed myself, and I have a backup to boot at no charge. Caution: I did receive a call stating I voided any warranty, but it had already run out. Oh well, I have a working fridge!

Repairman came today and fixed my Maytag french door H2O that was having the same problem , lights flashing and ice door flapping . He installed a new high voltage circuit board Maytag #12920710 .It goes behind the metal plate on the back , right hand side of the frig. Cost was $267.59 installed . Repairman said that the original boards didn't have correct resistors on them and voltage surges blew them out , new boards have correct resistors this shouldn't happen again .

We had the same problem. I didn't want to take anything apart to stop the door from opening and closing as I didn't want to risk voiding any warranty. Instead I slipped a folded paper towel in there to muffle the sound. You also need to block off the opening from the inside to preserve the temperature. I forgot to do this and the food went bad in the week it took them to come out and replace it.

Bad High voltage Board. Order and replace. Card must be accessed from rear of frig behind small door. After startup, you must enter code on front panal whic is found on the tag located upper right inside frig.

At first Maytag sent an AE repair person who had no idea what was wrong,we told him and he said OK it's $109 for me to be here today and it will be $500 to repair, $277 for the part that cost $179. I refused. I refused to pay anything got back on the phone with Maytag and at first they said there were no issues with this unit. I asked to speak to a supervisor saying this is a known issue. He came back on the line said they would order the part, it would be free, installation covered free and he would get the $109 taken care of. They come back tomorrow hopefully...

You can disable the ice/water dispenser but still allow the refrigerator to maintain temperature.

Turn off the power at the circuit breakers. Remove the drip tray to expose screws, and remove the screws. Carefully slide the faceplate upward to remove it. There is a circuit board on the back side of the faceplate with 3 leads. Carefully unplug the righthand lead. Reset the circuit breaker.

When I did this, the display returned to the normal temperature setting and the noise stopped. Ice maker also seems to be disabled.

If you need to remove the circuit board to be able to work on the leads, it is just clipped in place and removes easily. If you have to force anything, you're doing it wrong.

Thanks! Perfect. We had the same exact issue. Of course, it appears that it may just be about a year and one month. Luckily we purchased an extended warranty. Over 3K for a refrigerator. As someone reported above, we too had a GREAT frig that was more than 10 years old. It worked and looked great! We had a maytag microwave go out. So we replaced with a top of the line GTE Profile Stainless Steal one. Of course that meant we had to replace the stove, double ovens, dishwasher, trash compactor, and of course the refrigerator. We replaced with all GTE Profile except of course the Refrigerator. They did not have that in stock at the time and said the Maytag one was the top of the line. I didn't want to use the Maytag because we had bought the top of the line washer and dryer from Maytag and spent a pretty penny for them. Purchased extended warranties. They constantly went out, from the begining. Their customer service and company was terrible. I knew I should not of purchased a Maytag. The store rep at Lowes talked us into it. Well mainly talked my wife into it which talked me into it. Anyways stay away from Maytag products. I thank you so much for the Temporary reprieve followed your instruction and turned that noisy ice flapper off. Lowes extended warranty company is sending out a person. They gave me a 9 HOUR WINDOW. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT 9 HOURS. Our company has a 2 hour response time for all our products that we cover. Well again thanks.

The control lights on the refrigerator keep blinking. No function for water or ice.

Hi,

Unplug the refrigerator for few minutes, say 30 minutes and then turn it ON. This would reset the control board. If the problem still persists, this is an internal failure, most probably control board. If you have electronics repair experience, could read schematics, would be able to use multimeter and could keep precautions, revert and i would be able to tell you few pointers. However, repairman is recommended as it could be quite dangerous to work on these refrigerators.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Mf12568aeb lights flashing and ice door flapping

You will have to call Maytag at 1-800-688-9900...Motherboard is bad. You can pull out the little plate at the bottom of the water/ice dispenser, then unscrew the two screw. Pull on the bottom and the panel should come out. Unplug the white connector on the left. This will stop the flapping of the ice dispenser flap.

Maytag Part # 12920710 will work on this model and it is 40.00 cheaper than the one it shows when you do a parts search. It will come up 12920709. I checked with Maytag and they said 710 will work..
