I assume the AF/M switch on the body is set to AF as well? This has not been mentioned but the D50 has two drive systems for AF.
SOURCE: Flash on Nikon D50 will not latch down
If you have a fine screwdriver, remove the two screws underneath the pop up flash housing and remove the upper housing. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE 300V at wires under the cover. You can see where the latch catches on a disk with steps - rotate the disk to a lower step and it will catch. Otherwise, an independent repair shop can probably do it while you wait for less than $40 USD.

Perhaps you have accidentally set the auto-manual focus to manual on the camera body?
Per.
PS. The r10 message is just a report of the current memory buffer status, not an error indication.

Apparently, judging from this site, this is a common problem for this camera. I had mine in for cleaning overseas and they told me the lens was too advanced for the camera-but it worked before!
It sounds like 2 possible fixes are :
#1: making sure the lens is fully clicked in
#2: switching the custom setting from AE-L/AF-L to AE/AF LOCK. This one I just found from a posting on this site and will try it later today!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK! Otherwise I love the camera!
