SOURCE: I have a Coleman Powermate
when the engine sets for a long time the gas can seep bast in to the cylinder and their will be some gas you will need to change the oil and take the spark plug out and air i suggest you squirt a small amount of oil in the cylinder gas in the cylinder can wash out the lube to the rings and cause undo wear and start smoking turn the engine by hand slowly to allow lubing of the rings the gas seepage is most likely caused by a float that's not set correctly you may need to rebuild the carb with a kit around 20 bucks ans easy to do at least the clean it well to remove schlack that gas leaves behind when it dissipates and can cause issues.
replace with fresh gas and run the engine and it will smoke for a couple mins do to the oil in the cylinder remove the spark pug after running a couple mins and clean or replace the engine should be fine following the steps above. hope this helps

To find the correct part on line, first determine the engine model number and code stamped or labeled on the engine fan cover. For example will be Briggs, or Honda etc. Once you determine the Engine brand and model number, you can go to a web address like Jacks small engine, or even ebay or a replacement part or carb kit. May be easier to take the engine information to a mower repair shop in your area for a replacement. The engine on your generator is similar to one used on lawn equipment. Good luck
