We purchased our 46 inch tv November 3, 2008, and during the last year the tv has had double shadowing and now the whole screen has turned into blurred lines. We have the tv in an authorized dealer and they said to repair it will cost approximately $1100. to $1400. therefore it is not worth fixing. We noticed that there are a number of people with the same problem on the internet and Toshiba ignores them even though they promise to call back.

I think that the pop you heard was an electrolytic capacitor blowing its top on the picture frame board. If you are able to check this for yourself by looking on the board for the one/s with a bulging top or are a brownish/black colour like something has caught fire. And also in this situation smell can be of great help as it will smell burnt out but PLEASE before putting your nose or anything else in the tv take all necessary precautions against electric shock and discharge any electrolytic capacitors in the vicinity. If you are not able to do this yourself find a competant technician. Hope this helps.

troubleshooting PCB's of certain electronic units require advanced technical skills. no service manual of any source would provide specific solutions. the best you can get are schematic diagrams. if your field of expertise is not related to electronics, i suggest you let the technicians handle the problem for you. every shop have their repair cost qoutations. just be sure to ask for warranty of their repair. goodluck!

panel is cracked the cost of the repair is usually about 90 percent of the cost of the tv when purchased new. panel and labor. not worth if panel is cracked.

It sounds to me that the Main board is causing the problem. But I would get in touch with Toshiba for a warranty repair. It has a one year parts and labor warranty. It makes it a lot cheaper for the pocket.
Good Luck,

Diana, did you ever find a solution? My Toshiba (same model) is about 2 years old and it started getting these 4 horizontal lines spaced pretty far apart and a double image at bottom. When I lightly tap the top of the TV, they went away. But now that is not working. Please let me know. Thanks.
