Phaser 8400 w/ Maintenance Kit problem

Hi, Thanks for your help. I did what you advised and cleaned all rollers with rubbing alcohol. I did notice the silicon coating on the large aluminum roller and cleaned it as well. Is the roller on the Maintenance Kit (which is moist with silicon) supposed to make contact with the large aluminum roller?

In any case, I am still having the paper feeding problem. I emptied both paper trays and tried feeding through the flip down manual feed tray and that too caused a misfeed. I think you're right in that there is slippage preventing the paper from feeding all the way through. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions? Do I need to take this thing apart for a thorough cleaning?

Thanks again.

What the heck happened. I swear I had sent you more info.
Yeah, I strongly suspect you have a bad registration clutch.
Let me know I can find the part number for you and instructions on how to change it.
Now I am trying to figure who I told this to LOL. I know I sent out a note concerning this, but obviously to the wrong person .. Someone thinks I am insane.Which really isn't much of a stretch.
Let me know. that clutch would take about 15 minutes to replace even if you never did one before. its pretty easy.

Paper Jam at exit holder

Hi jam_es_2001:
The roller in the maintenace kit applies a thin layer of oil to the image drum. When the image is applied to the drum the oi prevents the image from sticking. The cleaning blade cleans the drum after the image is applied to paper. After the image is applied to the paper the drum is cleaned by the cleaning blade and new oil is applied to the drum for the next image. Check the roller in maintence kit to see if it is dry, if it is replace the maintenance kit.

Hope this helps

Paper jam related to Maintenance Kit

I wonder if you got some of the silicon lubricant from the maintenance kit on the rollers.
Try taking some alcohol or a cleaner such as fantastic, 409 etc and throughly clean all the rollers in the paper tray and along that transport behind the door.
If it isn't getting out of the tray you may coincidently have a smoothe feed roller, if it is feedinf a couple of inches out of the tray and stopping in the lower rollers I suspect a slipping registration clutch. Removing the maintenance kit seems like an odd thing to start a jamming problem. As I said clean the rollers, I guess see if you happened to have gotten a chunk of ink in the paper path from the catch tray.
Is there any damage to the paper? And tears or dents in the page?
Let me know we can resolve the problem.

Ink gets carried over to subsequent sheets

More than likely your maintenance kit roller has been impacted with ink and is not applying enough lubricant to the drum. You can replace the maintenance kit and run cleaning procedures a couple of times to allow it to clean up.
Now the other issue is if you are using a third party ink stick. By that I mean non xerox brand ink sticks. I have seen those cause that problem more often than not.
Pull out the maintenance kit and see if the large roller, which should be a off white, is black.
Exacly what is happening is your maintenance kit puts a very thin film of silicon oil on the drum so that the ink does not adhere to the drum more than normal. When that roller becomes blackened, it isn't very effective and you get some of that residual imaging.

Phaser 8400 blurred print

If it is blurred, the problem is the drum motor encoder. It picks up the silicon lubricant from the maintenance kit, and once its gets contaminated it causes the drum to run the wrong speed.
What you have to do is remove the right cover, looking from the front.
Then locate the drum. Its about mid way back on the machine. The encoder is in that area.
If you go to Xerox.com, there is a parts list and diagrams located under drivers and documentation.
Look up the parts list and the Drum encoder to locate it. It is not real hard to find, or remove and clean. What you want to clean it with is alcohol. No no, Not vodka..... use a strong rubbing alcohol to break down the silicon and clean the encoder, then put it back on the machine.
It may need replaced, but the majority of the time, cleaning the encoder resolves the problem.
You may just want to write down the part number when you locate it, just in case you would have to order one. But I really believe cleaning it will resolve your problem. It does fix the blurrs about 80 percent of the time.

PHASER 8400

There is an encoder on the drum drive motor that picks up lubricant from the maintenance kit. It may simply need cleaned, if cleaning doesnt work, it will need to be replaced.
Xerox has parts lists on the xerox.com site for that product if you need to locate it.

Maintanance kit replace

Problem:
The machine displays the Replace Maintenance Kit after the Maintenance Kit has been replaced.
Cause:
There may two causes for this issue.
  1. The machine does not recognize that the Maintenance Kit was removed. This would likely be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate.
  2. The machine corrupts the CRUM on the new Maintenance Kit. This may be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate or IO Board.
Solution: thumbsup.gif Fixed! thumbsdn.gif Did not fix.
  1. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message does not change to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a new Maintenance Kit.
  2. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message changes to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the IO Board and then install a different NEW Maintenance Kit. If the problem persists, replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a different NEW Maintenance Kit.

Phaser 8400

The 8400 has a known issue with the plastic that was used for the tilt mechanism on the oiling roller. If you look inside where the cartridge is removed you should see a crack that opens when pressure is applied. The high heat causes this unit to crack. You need that part. Or some good super glue. I have fixed 3 of my 8400's with this same issue.

Good Luck
