For quite awhile, the dryer drum has continued to turn when opening the door in the middle of a cycle. This wasn't a problem for me. When drying a load yesterday, the drum stopped turning in the middle of the drying cycle, even though the heat was still working. The drum turns when I rotate it by hand, but stops after about 1/4-1/2 turn, so I'm thinking the belt must be okay, and it may be the door switch, which does seems loose when I touch it with my finger.
What is the model number of your unit? Look inside the door area.

That's exactly the part I already found on eBay last night and put on my watch list there, so thanks for confirming that my guess was correct (part 3406107), and I can now order it! I'll check the link you gave me. Hope there are also written instructions, because watching a video isn't going to work on my dial-up internet. :( Thanks so much for your help! (I successfully replaced the lid switch on my Kenmore washer by myself two years ago, so hope this will turn out as well!)
Update: I was able to watch the video using a friend's highspeed internet, so thanks again for all your help! Just have to wait for the part to arrive now.

Doesn't that part have to do with heat? My dryer is producing heat. It's just that the drum isn't rotating. (The old door switch was faulty, by the way. Its black "lever" was very loose, so I don't regret having replaced that.) Forgive my ignorance, but how do I check the thermal fuse to see if it's bad? Do I need some kind of meter for that, which I don't own? Sorry, I'm a female, self-taught, do-it-yourselfer. :)

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.

The belt probably broke, and coincidentally happened while drying the shoes. The belt is easy to replace. Open the back and you'll probably see the belt laying on the bottom

I didn't know that the unit was heating. Disregard the thermal fuse. You have a problem with the motor. Does it hum or anything?
It sounds perfectly normal, actually, and the dryer turns on just fine. The drum just stopped turning last weekend halfway through a 30-minute drying cycle, and I only realized that when I suddenly couldn't hear the clothing flipping around inside.
OK, replace the motor and you will be good to go. I just discovered something that may change your answer. There is no "idler pulley," as shown in the video, around my drum. There's a dark line encircling the drum where that pulley would have been, though, so I used a flashlight to look down inside to the right of the drum, and I think that pulley might have broken and is laying down on the inside bottom. Does this make the situation better or worse? (This dryer has only been used for 1-2 loads a week since first purchased, so it definitely hasn't been overworked. It's 9-10 years old.)
It's a lot cheap to replace the pulley. You will need to open the cabinet to inspect it further.

Finally opened the dryer to get the broken belt out. (Too many other constant interruptions with other hassles.) Anyway, I don't think I need the whole kit (4392065). The rollers and idler pulley look okay to me. I think I could take of this with just the belt (341241), because that is what snapped, and it was coiled on the bottom inside the dryer. (The original broken belt has the part #3394651 on it, but I believe 341241 is the correct replacement for it, right?)

Success, Richard! I installed the new belt, and my dryer is working again. My next replacement will probably be the drain pump on my washer, from what I've learned through researching it. My machne is starting to have a small leak from the bottom center front during the spin/drain cycle. Not too bad yet, and only sometimes. Thanks so very much for all your help!
