Visioneer OneTouch 5800 Flatbed Scanner Logo
Posted on Jan 08, 2009

I have the OneTouch 5800. I installed it on my hp laptop. The diagnostic says it is running. When I try to scan the message says to "unlock" the scanner. Where is the "unlock" button? I do not see one on the bottom of the scanner.

No prollem! In fact, my solution for this particular scanner also works on many other scanners and other equipment in general. It turns out that the power supply must be sending the appropriate CURRENT to the scanner, regardless that it is the correct VOLTAGE. I'm a computer tech and I discovered this when I happen to have two scanners that used the same voltage power supply. I just grabbed one and plugged it in to each of them and neither scanner reacted properly. But the power supply was Very warm, indicating it was doing its best to keep up with the current requirements of both scanners. So I plugged in the correct power supply and voile, both worked perfectly.
Lesson learned. In fact, one of the many possible solutions given on the Visioneer site is to plug the power supply directly into the wall as opposed to using a power strip. Obviously this would allow the power supply to draw as much current as it needed thus solving the same problem I had, low current. I read another person's complaint that they had no problem with their scanner for a couple years and then suddenly this error was popping up. Well obviously the old power supply was no longer doing it's job, and would have to be replaced.
Spread the word! These devices are sensitive to the level of power that they can draw.
Oh, by the way, the proper voltage is 12V (positive tip), and the current is 1.25A.

5800usb says there is a lock on the bottom of the scanner. to click OK after you have unlocked the scanner. I do not find a lock anywhere on the scanner

There is no lock on the Visioneer 5800 USB scanner. I had the same problem with my 5800 and finally noticed that the scanner lamp was going bad. I replaced it with a good lamp out of an old Acer parallel port scanner that even had the same plug, noticed that an older HP that I have sitting around would have interchanged as well. My 5800 now works great and has been tried on both 98SE and XP with SP2.

Keep getting error message to unlock scanner.....says it can be unlocked from the bottom of the scanner, but I don't see it.

My one touch 5800 USB scanner worked great on XP for over a year and then started giving me the unlock the scanner message. I tried different power supplies, reloading software and moving it to a machine running 98SE and nothing improved. I left the cover open and noticed that the lamp was fairly bright at the sides but very dim in the center. I replaced the lamp with one from an old parallel port scanner which was in good shape and it now works perfectly on 98SE. I have not connected it to a XP machine yet.

My 5800 keeps telling me to unlock it when I click scan, but I can't find the lock anywhere.

The 5800 scanner does not have a physical lock switch. DO NOT attempt to open the scanner and unlock the hardware. This could be either a hardware failure or software
Toggle the lock switch on the scanner leaving the switch in the unlocked (open padlock) position.
Ensure you are using the correct power supply for your scanner. If you are using a power supply that has the incorrect DC output, you will get a scanner locked error message. This flatbed scanners has I believe 100-120V AC input and 12V DC output.

Plug the power directly to the wall, not a UPS battery back-up, power strip or surge protector. Power fluctuations from a UPS battery back-up, power strip or surge protector may be causing this error. If all this fails try reinstalling the scanner driver

How do you unlock a visoneer scanner 5800 I got back from a trip and tried to scan something and the bar is locked now and won't move more than an inch. The error message says to unlock it but I can't find...

Ensure you are using the power supply that was provided with the scanner.

The power through the strip may be fluctuating and causing the problem.

Download and install the driver provided on the 5800 USB support website.

5800 Visoneer Scanner: Getting message that I need to unlock it...

Power supply has to put out 1.25A. If it is either too weak due to age, not directly connected to the wall where it can get the power it needs or the wrong replacement, it won't work and you'll get this error.
Also, the voltage is 12V (positive tip).

I'm trying to install my One Touch 5800 flatbed scanner. I have no disc

This appears to be two questions. "I have no disc" is solved by downloading the drivers from the Visioneer site.
I do not understand the second part...???

I keep getting this message to unlock my scanner. how?

I have the same problem with a 5800 and 5820 model occasionally.
No switch. But I have found if I jiggle the cords on the 5820 model or plug and unplug it will eventually work.
With the 5800 model, I have had to lift the back end and gently tap the bottom while it is beginning to scan, it "unlocks" and continues.
Hope this works for you.

One touch 5800 will not scan

You just need to run the installation CD for the scanner and it will tell you when to connect the unit and it will also install a utility on your computer that you can use for scanning..

Hope that helps..........

Unlock

Most scanners shipped have a lock on them to prevent the top from opening up and damaging the glass. This is a screw type mabey other but a penny fits in mine. This may not be the case for you but look in your manual to find the unlock device.
This will also in some scanners prevent the stepper motor from moving in transit . The stepper motor is the device thats makes the bar slide up and down to scan the page.
Hope this helped some.
