I have a Roper-Whirlpool heavy duty super capacity plus washer that fills and agitates, but does not spin and drain.
My whirlpool doesent spin
What is the model number of your unit?
Have this problem right now. Problem was lid switch. I taped the switch back together the first time it busted. That fix lasted 5 months, and just happened again. I've seen the part online for about $25, but that seems a bit high to me. I may buy a generic lid switch and wire it in myself. Won't be as convenient as replacing the entire assembly, but it's probably a $5 fix if I do that.

It sounds like the agitator gripping teeth are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, pull the cap off and check the plastice teeth and four plastic hooks that grab the teeth. If they are worn out, then you will have to replace the agitator. To replace it, you will see a nut that is between the circlular teeth. Unscrew the nut and pull the agitator up hard.

Ours did this and it was because the bearings had busted. I called a local repair guy and he told me over the phone just by listening to the sound. Maybe you could do the same. I do know this, if it is your bearings, buy a new washer. It's not worth the repair...trust me.

If you suspect you have a defective timer it can easily be replaced by performing the following steps:
1. Unplug washing machine... and pull out the timer knob. Some knobs have a removeable center cap and hidden screw. Some are simply slip-fit. Remove the knob.
2. Remove console. This can be accomplished in one of two ways depending on which type of console you have.
a. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer.
The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer.
There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.
b. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side and push in while lifting up.
There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.
3. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.
4. Disconnect all power plugs and remove the timer's mounting screws.
5. Reinstall reverse of removal.

Your model may have a flexible (break able) drive component between the motor and the transmission. Check that, it is a pretty easy replacement.
Testimonial: "Thanks! Both the Drive Coupler and the Agitator Dogs are Bad. ( Hope It's not a Transmission problem as well)"
