I have an Olympus E520 and was given a Zuiko 70-300mm zoom lens for Christmas.
The lens has a switch for AF and MF.
I've taken some nice photos with the lens switched to AF, and it certainly zooms a lot closer than my other lens.
Question is, i've noticed that it only focuses with the lens protruding (out) to the 1:8 150mm markings (markings are on the actual lens barrel).
There seems to be about the same amount of lens again that could theoretically be extended. There are markings for 1:4 300mm and 1:3 and 1:2. If i try to extend the lens to these positions, i cannot focus the image at all.
It seems strange that the lens would extend further, without it being able to be focused. When extended , the image becomes larger, but not in focus at all.
I know this is probably a very basic beginners question, but i guess that is where i am at the moment so any advice would be gratefully received.

Ok, i am an idiot and i figured it out....
The various numbers on the barrel that extend beyond 300mm, say 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 etc are the
magnification for when you use it in macro. In autofocus at 300mm, it
will go to 1:3. To reach 1:2 you need to use MF.
I was thinking it would extend the zoom by extending the lens, in fact it was supposed to be for macro work...
