It turns out that when i plug in the had drive the light in it turns to blue and my macbook (currently running mountain lion) cannot recognize it when i plug it in, what should i do and how can i solve that

To fix the External HDD.
Take these steps.
In the (right, shortcut menu), select to open the Computer, by {right} clicking on it.
Check to see if there's a External Hard Drive 'letter ie; [F:] ?

Just make sure you have any and all data that you want saved moved elsewhere before proceeding.
First, click to open the Computer, on your "Desktop Screen"
or click on the "Start Button.
