You will need to replace the defrost thermostat located on the coils. Here is the part to order.

SOURCE: Evaporator coils icing up

Hi Jijm,

The time is really fast for the Evaporator to be freezing up like Sparkgap said. A possible solution is that you Defrost heater is burned out. It is usually located at the bottom of the evaporator encased inside a Glass Tube with a wire connected to both ends. If you have already accessed the Evaporator coils look for this heatrer and remove it for examination. What I find is the heater is usually burned in two. You can use a Volt ohm meter to check the resistance across the two connections, It should read less than 20 ohms. You can get another heater at www.repairclinic.com. Since you are icing up so fast, you might have your thermostat for the freezer set to wide open making it run all the time to gain the coldest temp possible. Please do not knock what Sparkgap said as you could have some moist air getting into your freezer through the door seals. If your heater is ok, then it may be the Defrost temperature sensor. This is unlikely, but still possible. I am not familiar with the Amana fridge so I am not sure where this sensor is located. It does have to be somewhere around the evap coils.

SOURCE: Refrigerator section on side by side losing cooling

Here is the Amana website with the manuals which should show you where the defrost timer etc. is located. Witht your model number and manual it will be a lot easer

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search.jsp?siteCd=AMA

And yes the defrost timer thermostat and heater are the most likely problem.

Do not let this keep running and running or you may lose your compressor too which means a lot more expense than now.

SOURCE: Freezer not freezing solid. Pulled off back

Your not going into defrost, the fridge cycles into defrost every 8-10hrs for approx 20mins....problem could be multile items, the defrost time, defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater, will need a meter to ohm heater and thermostat...thermostat will be a closed circuit when it gets below 22degrees. ohm the heater out...if both check ok, will be a timer issue. Can do a simpler check....in the fridge section near controls there is a smal hole with a gear on the inside....that is your defrost timer. take a falt tip screwdriver and turn that gear until it clicks, this will put the fridge into defrost...if everything on the heater side is ok you will hear a sizzle from the ice melting

My Whirlpool Refrigerator/Freezer Model #GR2FHTXVQ00 or GR2FHTXVO00 is not keeping food cold. Food is spoiling. Freezer is cold but Refrigerator is warm.

With signs of freezing up in freezer area that would indicate a problem with the defrost components. The most likely reason would be a defrost control board. 2304093 Defrost Control Board
Here is a link to a parts manual for your model=> GR2FHTXVQ00.pdf(1101.27 KB) Look on page 3 and part location 4 That is the=> 2304093 Defrost Control BoardThe next possible parts are the 2314157 Defrost Heater Assembly found as item location 4 on page 9 of the PDF. Evaporator coil freezes up. Manually defrosted last night, next day I think it's froze up again due to with evap fan running no air is coming through the upper transfer opening. Was hoping it was the...

nothing to do with gas charge
more to do with faulty door seals allowing air into the area
refrigerator section at 29F is way to cold as it should be no less than 40 F ( 29 F is below freezing point and that will spoil food in the fridge )

Freezer is freezing, but fridge temp ranges between 40 and 50 degrees, problem?

Greetings,
usually this is a defrost problem...See if there is ice building up on freezer back wall and if so, you will find the evaporator froze over. I would first make sure you see or hear the freezer fan motor coming on. A evap fan not coming on will cause a no cool problem in fresh food section.

If there is ice on the freezer coil. It needs to be defrosted and then we can find the problem. Once its defrosted..it will work good as new until it freezes over again..The most likely problem is defrost thermostat or heater or timer or electric defrost board...you need to know how to use a meter to check these. The defrost thermostat can be bypassed to check it. use your meter to check the heater..if good, and you bypassed the thermostat and nothing happened..Its most likely the defrost timer or board. If a manual timer..you can advance it to defrost and see if it comes on.

if its an electronic defrost board, sometimes you can get them into a defrost by pushing the light switch in 5 times within 10 seconds..there may be a tech sheet on the refrigerator showing this
please let me know if you need more help....Bruce

Bad defrost timer/ thermostat???

It definitely sounds like you have a bad defrost timer, that is the reason the coils are icing up on you. The next issue, which may or may not be related is the freezing of items in the refrigerator. Usually the cold air is transferred, through a vent with a damper, from the freezer and into the refrigerated section. The "thermostat" for this section is actually usually just a lever to adjust the position of the damper. That being said, usually when you have a problem such as you are having, it is either a stuck or broken damper (or damper component). Hope this helps

Frost on back wall of freezer, side by side, wont freeze

It's most likely a defrost issue. One or more of your defrost components have failed. Defrost components are defrost thermostat, defrost heater, and defrost timer or board depending on model

Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp
