Paper Feed Not Automatically Switching to Multi-Purpose Tray

According to the User's Guide, when the paper cassette runs out of paper, the fax machine should automatically switch to the Multi-Purpose Tray. Our machine does not. I re-fed the paper into the multi-purpose tray and it will only feed if the paper cassette is pulled out of the fax machine. If the empty cassette is pushed all the way in, the machine comes back with an Alarm, saying paper jam. Any ideas?

Paper does not feed correctly; end of paper looks crumpled, but it does not happen on every sheet.

Sounds like the paper out sensor for the cassette is either broken or jammed. Pull out the cassette tip the machine on its back and you should see a black arm hanging down. This should be able to swing back and fourth freely. Unless it is missing or broken.

How do you access bypass tray?

The bypass tray is refered to as the multi-purpose (MP) tray. It is located vertically on top at the back of the fax machine. The fax needs to be programmed (told what size of paper is loaded) by opening the One-Touch Speed Dialing panel, press the 'Data Registration' button, press 'Set' button, then using up or down arrows to select " 5.PRINTER SETTINGS ". Press 'Set' button, then press down arrow to display " 2.PAPER SIZE ". Press 'Set', use arrow s to select CASSETTE or MP TRAY. Use arrows to select appropriate size of paper loaded. Press 'Set'. Press 'Stop' button to return to standby mode. Reference pages 15-11 and 15-12 in LC 2050 Users Guide.

Is there a lever or switch that tells the printer to grab from the front tray?

On the machine panel, the "feeder" button selects paper source and media type to be used. This must match the media/paper size selected in your software.

MP - multi-purpose tray
T1 - the upper paper cassette
T2 - the optional lower paper cassette

Printer will not kick out document automatically, attention lite keeps flashing. tray 2 selected but always defaults back to tray 1

Sounds like you have a mismatch in the paper you are trying to print on and the paper that is loaded in the printer. HP printers look to feed paper from tray 1 anytime the computer settings don't match the paper loaded in tray 2. Tray 1 is the multi purpose tray and prety much any size paper can be loaded in tray 1. Double check your document settings and double check the paper size loaded in the paper tray 2 and make sure they match. Also try printing a different document to see if the error persists. If it does this on everything you try to print you should also double check teh rear guide in the paper tray. There is a rear guide in paper tray 2. If it slides back too far it will make the printer think that paper longer than 8 1/2 x 11 is loaded. Push the paper all the way forward in the tray and push the rear guide until it is snug with the tail end of the paper stack.

We have a Canon Laser Class 700 series fax machine. When it runs out of paper in cassette tray 1 it doesn't automatically begin to use paper from cassette tray 2. Both cassettes have plain white letter...

Swap cassettes.. The side guides on one of them may not be tight against the paper.

Only put paper in the lower cassette and try to print a journal.

Print out a configuration page or parameter list to see if the machine knows you have two trays.

Default Tray

Did you set the default tray in the "Printer Properties" in Control Panel? Or, if you did, do you get any paper tray related error messages? It's possible that there is some sensor flag that's malfunctioning. Usually, however, it's just a setting in the printer driver.

Auto feeds crooked

Are we talking about a paper feed problem from the paper cassette tray or the Auto Document feeder on the top. Either way, check the the paper width guides, or if it is the paper cassette tray, remove it and check the paper pick up roller locking clips.
