Big black sqare in screen. green lock is locked

I forgot the code for the parent lock how can i reset it

How do I obtain a parent code for my child's leap pad ultra? My child started the ultra before I could set up anything.

Turn the unit off. Press and hold both the power button and the volume button at the same time, until the little yellow-green android robot comes on the screen. You can then release the buttons. You will eventually get a menu (this took a while to come up). Use the Volume button to scroll down to "Reset to Factory Standards", and select by pressing the power button.

When the unit powers up, you will hear a single beep and all of the soundlights will illuminate. Release the volume down switch and within 2 seconds you will hear two beeps and all of the Sound Light LEDs will stay lit and the bottom LED will be red. 10. Repeat steps 5

Did you unplug the set from the wall and wait 5 min. replug and try. Cusult your owner manual regarding parental Locks?

The clue is the black box, usually thats the close captioning box

Parental Lock Feature

Combo's, Screen will say VCR Lock Activated.
During stop or power off, hold the stop/eject button on the unit for at least seven seconds.

Combo's, Another method
With unit on and no cassette inside, hold the rec/time button on the front of unit for 7 seconds.

CTV's Lock Mode
Only the on/off button will work,the others have no effect. Press the action and power buttons at the same time on the front of the set for 10 seconds or so.

LCD TV's, Lock Mode
If customer forgot Parental Lock Code, unit must be re-initialized.
Press and hold the Volume down button on the front panel, press the OK button on the remote for 5 seconds.

Setting Method
The sales demonstration lock function is set by simultaneously pressing the "POWER" button of DVD Player on the remote control unit and the "STOP" button on the main unit. ("LOCKED" is displayed when the lock function is engaged.)
Release Method
The function can be released using the same procedure as for setting. If the remote control unit is not at hand, the function can be released by using the same method as for player initialization (pressing the "PAUSE," "SKIP/SEARCH<<"and "OPEN/CLOSE" buttons simultaneously).

From the Owners manual: Open tray, Keep Pressing Rec and Play/X 1.3 buttons on the remote for 5 or more seconds.
Another servicer found resetting to defaults worked well.

the backlight or fuses are dead. Do not bypass fuses or you'll kill your system.

Shut off the closed captioning and your problem will be gone.

if your big black square starts about the middle of the tv & goes down close to the bottom, you have closed caption text turned on. normal closed caption is small, but test caption, is just a big black box with no writing in it. go into your menu & shut it off, it could even be a button on your remote called, "caption", or "cc". good luck.
