Amplification was going on and off. it now stays on but there's some cracking noises through the amp when strumming
There are only a few things that could be responsible for your problem. Dirty volume knob on guitar or amp. Faulty ground on all affected parts; including cables. I suggest you plug into a different amp with a new chord, and see if the problem still exists. This way you can quickly eliminate compnents & focus on the actua lproblematic one. If it still exists..you can assume it'sin the pick-up.
A common problem is a worn jack on the guitar where you plug in your cable. This happens when the player fails to restrain the cable either in their guitar strap or a loop under their belt. A dangling cable rotates the plug in the jack until plating is worn off and connection becomes intermittent. Restrain the cable like the professionals do... OR get a wireless link that doesn't use a long cable.
Ok thanks for that Fred, I havent a clue what it means but I'll take it to a professional who knows about restraining the cable as you said. Because I keep the guitar in its case alot of the time I have to take off the strap and I'm wondering what affect this may have had on the jack plug??? Also, compared to a friends really cheap pick up, mine is very quiet when it is actually on. Thanks for your help.
The idea is to prevent the guitar cable from dangling from the jack on the guitar and rotating. The jack is usually a stereo type jack that the mono plug grounds the second of three contacts together to turn on the battery. Hence, if this becomes intermittent, the pickup will cut in and out and crackle. When playing, run the cord through your guitar strap or tuck a loop under your belt to prevent the weight of the cord from wearing the jack in the guitar.
Thanks for the advice, I didnt realise. I'll do that from now on.

Thanks very much for your solutions Mark. I've tried plugging onto a different amp and cable with another guitar before plugging mine in. Unfortunately, mine still did the cracking thing whilst the other guitar did not. I've found a well referenced luthier so I'm saving up so that I can take it for a check-up! Thanks for your help.
