Crackling through amp occasionally

Amplification was going on and off. it now stays on but there's some cracking noises through the amp when strumming

  • Anonymous Dec 10, 2012

Thanks very much for your solutions Mark. I've tried plugging onto a different amp and cable with another guitar before plugging mine in. Unfortunately, mine still did the cracking thing whilst the other guitar did not. I've found a well referenced luthier so I'm saving up so that I can take it for a check-up! Thanks for your help. There are only a few things that could be responsible for your problem. Dirty volume knob on guitar or amp. Faulty ground on all affected parts; including cables. I suggest you plug into a different amp with a new chord, and see if the problem still exists. This way you can quickly eliminate compnents & focus on the actua lproblematic one. If it still exists..you can assume it'sin the pick-up.

A common problem is a worn jack on the guitar where you plug in your cable. This happens when the player fails to restrain the cable either in their guitar strap or a loop under their belt. A dangling cable rotates the plug in the jack until plating is worn off and connection becomes intermittent. Restrain the cable like the professionals do... OR get a wireless link that doesn't use a long cable.

Ok thanks for that Fred, I havent a clue what it means but I'll take it to a professional who knows about restraining the cable as you said. Because I keep the guitar in its case alot of the time I have to take off the strap and I'm wondering what affect this may have had on the jack plug??? Also, compared to a friends really cheap pick up, mine is very quiet when it is actually on. Thanks for your help.

The idea is to prevent the guitar cable from dangling from the jack on the guitar and rotating. The jack is usually a stereo type jack that the mono plug grounds the second of three contacts together to turn on the battery. Hence, if this becomes intermittent, the pickup will cut in and out and crackle. When playing, run the cord through your guitar strap or tuck a loop under your belt to prevent the weight of the cord from wearing the jack in the guitar.

Hello, I bought a second hand Martin J1 that has a fishman rare earth single coil pickup fitted. The problem is, when its plugged into the amp ( AER 60w) it makes a cracking noise every so often when

You have several options:

1. Do nothing and live with the occasional problem.

2. Check your guitar cable and the battery connections for loose or intermittent connections/noise. Try to see if it's the amp responsible for the noise....ie, Is it caused by vibrations, or maybe static....especially in winter when it's dry. Your home power may have noise on the line, so borrow or rent a power conditioner which filters out noise. If that fails, go to 3.

3. Bite the bullet and pay a competent guitar tech/luthier to repair it. Most of these issues are due to loose/faulty connections. Should be less than an hour. Hey....It's a Martin.

3a. Pay a guitar tech to loosen the end pin connector so you can see if you can repair it yourself.

Most likely cause for this is an intermittent potentiometer. Check to see if any of them are mechanically loose as this is a sign that they have been damaged and could have cracked the wiper surface inside the pot causing this problem. Alternatively, any switch that controls any gain setting could also be intermittent or dirty. Gain of the amplifier should be stable, but is controlled by the feedback and signal injection at the pots so that is where to look first. Good luck, as intermittent problems are tricky, but sometimes better than no function at all which can be more costly.

Likely the filter capacitors have a problem. Best to take this in for repair... it is ODD that there is noise with the standby switch is in standby... That makes no sense... In standby it appears that power is removed from the power amp high voltage so nothing should come through the speaker... Unles maybe one off the power tubes had a total meltdown which should have blown the fuse.

Likely either a rectifier diode, a filter capacitor, or the power amp transistor or chip/stick have shorted and failed. Unless you are electronically adept, it is time to take it to the shop as the cause of the failure will not fix itself. DO NOT replace the fuse as additional damage may occur..

Marshall DSL 401 runs fine for about 10 minutes from cold then starts to crackle and sound disappears The amp is fairly new with not a lot of use

if this a tube amp then your tubes might be going bad. but if it is a solid state amp then im not to sure whats going on.
