My towels stink. They smell fine out of the dryer (I do dry them thoroughly), but smell really bad as soon as they get wet--it is disgusting. I have tried everything, and yes, I leave the washer door open all the time when not in use, and yes, I use the monthly cleaning cycle. The washer itself does not smell. Just the towels. What can I do to get the nasty smell out of the towels? Please help.
The solution is to add additional water to the wash and rinse cycles. The problem of stinky towels is caused by not being able to rinse the soap out because not enough water is being used during each cycle. To determine if this is your problem try and wash a load of clean dry cloths/towels, if this is the problem you will see suds form in the washer. Repeat the rinse cycle until you no longer see suds. This should give you a clue if low water levels are your problem.
Increasing the water level in my washer solved all of the problems that my wife was having with the new front loader and save me from a life of misery (A condition of mental or emotional unhappiness or distress.) Because as you know if momma ain't happy no one’s happy! It would be so easy if they would allow you to select the level of water that you used to wash with. There are lots of other problems with these advanced washers stinky cloths and mildew are just one problem.

I had the same problem, and have the solution. You won't believe this, but try it.
Use powdered HE detergent instead of liquid HE. I don't know why, but it makes a difference. Also if you must use fabric softener, use only a high quality one. The cheap ones form more of a build up.
Don't use fabric softener. I had the same problem and read somewhere to stop using the fabric softeners. I don't know why but after about two cycles (they smelled really bad) it worked! I always used fabric softeners with out a problem but one day I just started getting REALLY smelly towels. I always take my wet wash out as soon as the cycle ends and dry it completely so I was surprised when they smalled so bad. Give it a try.

Thanks, kmack, but I do not use any fabric softener (or dryer sheets for that matter). I also use only a small amount of detergent and remove the towels immediately after the cycle is finished. Still I have this problem with stinky towels.
I have the same problem and only the white towels smell o.k. and that is when I add a little bleach. I hate the smell of my coloured towels, they smell rancid and musty, laundry is supposed to smell clean.
