I have a Kenmore upright freezer model# 253.9260210. We noticed that our food was starting to thaw. I opened up the coil area and noticed a small piece of ice on the coils. I melted the ice and turned it back on. The coils started to get cold and the fan was on but the temp is still not getting that cold, about 40 degrees now and it has been about a hour since I turned it on. Any thoughts??

Can you feel the top of the compressor for me to insure it is not a defective start relay or run capacitor? Sorry it has taken me a while to reply. Work got in the way. I was looking on a Kenmore sight and it took me to parts select and according to them, there were 2 parts that would cause this. They were the start relay and a compontent that plugs into it. I changed both just now at will see what I will get. When it was running , I remember that the part was warm but I was able to put my hand on it. Sorry it has taken me a while to reply. Work got in the way. That;s OK I guess you need to get things when you can. Is the refrigerator running? If not go over my instructions again and let me know what is taking place. Uasally when the start relay, overload and/or the capacitor go bad the compressor will overheat pointing to one or more of those parts being defective. If compressor is running all the time your freezer may have a Freon leak. You did mention a small area of ice. When there is a leak if the freezer still has Freon you will see a frost line where only a few rows of the evaporator will have ice. The remaining rows will have water droplets. It has been running since 5:30. The freezer started out at 60 degrees and is now 45. It is still running and the top of the compressor is warm to the touch It has been running since 5:30. I let the freezer fun all night but it only got to 35 degrees. I just did what you suggested with the timer. I will let you know what happens shortly. After forgetting about your post and hearing from you again I recommend that you watch a few more hours and quickly remove the rear panel inside the freezer and photograph what you see. a small lump of ice on one part of the evaporator is a sure sign that the freezer is showing signs of a Freon leak. Temperatures should be below 0 degrees long ago. Compressor continues to run right? Timers have a lobe like a cam shaft and if for some reason the timer gears and motor are worn the timer can get stuck in the down in the defrost lobe and stay there forever or finally reach the outside of the lobe and begin working again. Keep an eye on your freezer because you are not safe yet to begin putting items inside again until we are sure. Yes leaks just happen more than most people realize. The evaporator will show a frost like up until there is insufficient Freon to show frost. No adding Freon is not something the typical home owner can do. I do not recommend you trying because it takes special tools and a knowelege of refrigeration.
