Problem with computer recognizing garmin nuvi 255w gps

I just bought this garmin nuvi 255w gps unit. I already have a good usb cable and plugged it into the gps unit....plugged it into my computer...but seems that computer doesn't see it attached. Do I have to do something else? The Garmin Screen shows the picture "attaching to computer" but my computer doesn't do anything. Please help. I just want to run updates and add more P.O.I. to it. thankyou

You must call Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 they will walk you through plugging in nuvi to your computer (must have usb cord) and it will upload then go to my computer and choose garmin drive then click garmin folder and either find the folder they say or make new one like I did with the guy on the phone and put in code. The only information needed is the numbers on the bottom of the device.... super fast fix!

mine would constantly cycle in the reboot. I had to clear the stored data by pressng and holding the lower right side of the screen and turning on the gps. once it boots up, it will ask if you want to clear the data memory (will not clear the actual maps). say yes, when it reboots, you will have to redo your personal settings as if it was new out of the box.

Plain and simple answer: Can't.
Detailed answer: this is a security system feature which cannot be bypassed. The only way to get around the password feature is to send it in to Garmin, with the original receipt from an authorized dealer, and they will unlock it for you.

Computer doesn't recognize garmin
Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin unit. If your computer does not detect your Garmin unit, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Turn the unit off and then back on again.
Plug the USB cable into your computer.
The unit either automatically goes into USB Mass Storage Mode or displays USB Mass Storage Mode as an option on the screen.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

If you still experience problems, please contact Product Support.

Nuvi 255w is not being recognized by my Dell
Hello,

If the computer does not recognize the GPS as another drive, then it is possible that there is a connection problem with the cable or the internal components of the GPS are shot.
Try the cable with a different device such as a digital camera or another GPS. If this works then the cable is fine, if not replace the cable with another one.
It is also possible that the Garmin support staff are correct.
The nuvi 255w is an older discontinued GPS and should probably be replaced with a newer unit.
The normal life span for a GPS is about 3 to 4 years and that is being generous. The battery life of the GPS can only cycle so many times before it becomes completely dead.

How to connect my garmin nuvi 255w to a computer
To connect the Garmin 255w you will need a usb cable. If you don't have one that came with it you can check all your other electronic devices like camera, camcorder,mp3 player etc..( my mp3 player usb cable worked fine). Carefully and gently try each one. One you get a usb cable connect it directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. then go over to the Garmin site and register the unit and download Garmin updater to update your unit. I an trying to register my nuvi 255w that i bought at canadian tier and get my update for it and i can not find out how to register it.my address is 88 woodstock drive,sherwood park,alberta canada,t8a4e2.
With the off, plug in your Nuvi to your computer using the supplied USB cable (you can also use a usb camera cord ).

The Unit will show a screen that your pluged in.

Now go to www.MyGarmin.com and register your unit. It then will give you the lastest updates.

I use the North American 2009 or Updated North American 2010 maps for when I go back and forth to Canada from the States.. both maps are good

I just bought a Garmin 265WT. I ran the registration program, but the computer does not recognize the Nuvi. I've checked My Computer and it does not show a new drive ( the Nuvi should like like a drive...

Try these steps:-

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

Also, in some cases the operating system does not support the device. Try upgrading it to the next higher level. In most of the cases windows Xp service pack 2 does not recognise this Garmin device. Try upgrading it to service pack 3.
If you are still experiencing the problem then you will need to contact Garmin for repair.

Nuvi is frozen on warning screen. Won't reset by hoding power but
If you haven't already done so, I would suggest you connect to Garmin.com, register your device, and download/install the WebUpdater.

Then connect your unit to your computer using the USB cable that was included. This will start your unit in a very different mode (it will appear as a storage device to your computer), which WebUpdater will recognize. WebUpdater will check the current release level of your unit's software and let you update it to the latest version. The update process may well cure the problem when next you start the unit in GPS mode.

Upgrading
Go to www.garmin.com and first, register your gps. Then you can plug it into your computer with a usb cable and download programming and map updates. Depending on what you want, there may be a fee for this. Wal-Mart also sells one-time, and lifetime update cards for all Garmin gps units.

I can't get my computer to recognize my Garmin 255w on USB cable.
Change the mini usb cable. Some mini usb cable are for charging and not data. It happen to me and used the externo hard drive usb mini cable and zapppppp my computer nows read the gps and gave it a drive (h:\). hope it works for you.
